The 1950/51 season was the 20th season of the Finnish SM-sarja . Champion was Ilves Tampere for the eighth time in the club's history . TP-V Tampere and TK-V Tampere relegated to the 2nd division.

The main round was held in two groups of five teams each. The first two in the group qualified for the championship final. The two runners-up met in the game for third place. The last two placed were relegated to the 2nd division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
