The 1986/87 SM-liiga season was the twelfth season of the Finnish SM-liiga . Finnish champions were for the tenth time and for the sixth time since the introduction of the SM-liiga Tappara Tampere , while Jokerit Helsinki was relegated to the second division.

Regular season

mode

The ten teams of the SM-liiga initially played against each other in 44 season games. While the first four teams qualified for the play-offs , the penultimate had to play against the teams in places two to four of the second division to keep up. The last one was automatically relegated to the second division and was replaced by the second division champions. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.

Play-offs

The semifinals were played in the "best-of-five" mode, the game for third place in a single playoff. The final, on the other hand, took place in the "Best-of-Seven" mode .

SM liiga relegation

The penultimate of the SM-liiga main round and the teams in places two to four of the second division played in a two-way round for promotion or relegation. In the relegation, KalPa secured relegation.
