Regular season

mode

The ten teams of the SM-liiga initially played against each other in 44 season games. The first four teams qualified for the play-offs . Due to a league expansion by two teams in the following year, no team was relegated directly. The last placed in the SM-liiga had to compete against the third-placed of the I-divisioona for relegation or promotion, with KooKoo prevailing against Reipas Lahti . Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
