Jarmo Pentti Kalevi Myllys (born May 29, 1965 in Savonlinna ) is a former Finnish ice hockey goalkeeper . During his career he played for the Minnesota North Stars and San Jose Sharks in the National Hockey League , as well as Ilves Tampere , Lukko Rauma , Espoo Blues and SaiPa Lappeenranta in the Finnish SM-liiga and Luleå HF and HV71 Jönköping in the Swedish Elitserien .

Career

As a player

Myllys began his career at SaPKo Savonlinna in his hometown and moved to Ilves Tampere for the 1983/84 season , where he played until the end of the 1985/86 season and won a championship. He then moved to Lukko Rauma for two seasons . In his last season in the SM-liiga he was awarded the Lasse-Oksanen trophy for the best player in the league.

For the season 1988/89 the goalkeeper moved to North America, where he ran up for the Minnesota North Stars , who had selected him in the NHL Entry Draft 1987 in the ninth round in 172nd position. In three seasons with the North Stars, the Finn was only used in twelve games and spent most of the time in the International Hockey League with Minnesota's farm team , the Kalamazoo Wings . In the summer of 1991 he moved to the San Jose Sharks due to the NHL Dispersal Draft . After he had played 27 games for the Sharks in the 1991/92 season , they sold him to the Toronto Maple Leafs in the summer of 1992 , for which he never played.

For the 1992/93 season Myllys returned to Finland, where he initially played for KooKoo Kouvola . In the following season he signed again for a year with his old club Lukko Rauma, then in 1994 to switch to the Swedish Elitserien to Luleå HF . In Luleå, he played a total of seven seasons until 2001 and was Swedish champion in 1996. He returned to Finland again for two years to the Espoo Blues . After another brief stint in Sweden with HV71 Jönköping in the 2003/04 season, he let his career end in his home country with SaiPa Lappeenranta . After the 2004/05 season , he ended his career.

International

Myllys plays for the Finnish national team in a total of two junior and six men's world championships . He also took part in three Winter Olympics and the World Cup of Hockey . At the Junior World Championships he was able to win a silver medal, at the Senior World Championships one gold and three silver medals, and one silver and three bronze medals at the Olympic Games. At the 1995 World Cup , he was voted Most Valuable Player .

As a trainer

In the 2014/15 season, Myllys worked as a goalkeeping coach and at times as an assistant coach at EC KAC . In the 2015/16 season he is assistant coach at Savonlinnan Pallokerho (SaPKo) from Mestis .
