The World Cup of Hockey was pronounced as the successor to the Canada Cup.

The World Cup of Hockey was held for the first time in August and September 1996 . The six best teams in the world competed, supplemented by two wildcard participants. The winner was the national team of the USA , which prevailed in three finals against Canada . Even Germany took in 1996 at the World Cup of Hockey in part, defeating it surprising that with many NHL players who traveled Czech national team with 7: 1, but then failed in the second round on hosts Canada.

At the World Cup of Hockey 2004 from August 30th to September 14th, the six best teams according to the then IIHF world rankings and two wildcard participants competed against each other. Due to the appointment before the start of the season, the coaches could again fall back on all NHL stars.

After the NHL regularly released their players for the Olympic Games from 1998 onwards , the World Cup of Hockey increasingly fell from view and paused. It was not until 2016 that the World Cup was held for the third time, but exclusively in Toronto , so that the event, unlike previous tournaments, only took place in one place.
