Ice hockey at the Olympics
During the 6th Olympic Congress in 1914, ice hockey was included in the Olympic program as an “optional sport” alongside other winter sports. Contrary to the variant widespread in Europe , which was played with a ball, the rules provided for “Canadian ice hockey with a disc”. After the games of VI. Olympics in Berlin did not take place due to the First World War , this sport experienced its Olympic premiere in 1920, when it represented the winter sports area of the VII Olympiad in Antwerp together with figure skating . At the subsequent Games of the VIII Olympiad in 1924, ice hockey was again part of the winter sports sector, which this time was held in Chamonix in eastern France and was retrospectively recognized as the First Olympic Winter Games at the 25th session of the IOC on May 6, 1926 . Ice hockey was also part of the competition calendar at all subsequent winter games.
After only men played ice hockey at the Olympic Games for 78 years, women’s ice hockey was included in the Olympic program for the first time in 1998 in Nagano . In addition, sledge ice hockey has been a Paralympic sport since 1994 .
