The international competitions for physical exercise and sport (Concours Internationaux d'Exercices Physiques et de Sports ) held in Paris as part of the World Exhibition ( Exposition Universelle et Internationale de Paris ) also included a game in the sport of pelota , which the International Olympic Committee (IOC) assigned to the program of the 1900 Summer Olympics (Games of the II Olympiad) .
Remarks
Pelota was called basque pelota by the organizers , because the origin of this game is in the Basque Country . Its predominant distribution in this region and the associated low level of awareness meant that a full tournament was not held among the amateurs. There was only one match between a Spanish and a French team, each consisting of two athletes. The game was played with the Chesta Punta , a racket that was pulled over the hand. Another advertised competition for a game with the bare hand (a mano) was canceled due to a lack of participation. The game took place on June 14th. The venue was a facility in Neuilly-sur-Seine of the local pelota association Société de Jeu de Pélota . The result is not known, only one winner and one loser were identified.
In contrast to the individual amateurs game, which the IOC regarded as Olympic , there was a small tournament for professionals with three teams, where everyone played against everyone between June 17th and 21st. This tournament was much more important to the organizers and was called Championat du monde . However, it is not recognized by the IOC as a non-Olympic tournament due to the amateur statutes .
