Swimming at the Olympic Games

The swimming is one of the oldest Olympic sports and is one of four sports that were represented at all Olympic Games. The sport consists of the five disciplines swimming , water polo , water jumping (also called art and tower diving), synchronized swimming and open water swimming . The world association FINA was founded at the Olympic Games of 1908 .

Open water swimming

Swimming has been part of the Olympic program since Athens in 1896 . In addition, the competitions at the first London Games took place in a specially built swimming pool. Until then, swimming was carried out in the sea, a river or in a lake. The first indoor stadium for the swimming competitions was built for the second games in London. At the 2008 Games , open water swimming was added to the Olympic program.

There are 32 swimming competitions at the Olympic Games - men 16 and women 16. In open water swimming there is one competition each for men and women.

Overview competitions of men

At the Games in Athens in 1896 and Paris in 1900 there were competitions in team swimming, obstacle swimming, sailor swimming and underwater swimming.

Overview of women's competitions

Women were allowed to start swimming for the first time in Stockholm in 1912 . Over time, the women's program has been aligned with the men's program.

Water polo

Water polo

Water polo was in Paris for the first time in 1900 in the Olympic program. At the following games in St. Louis , the water polo variant "Soft Water Polo" was held as a demonstration sport. Only US clubs took part in the tournament. The first proper Olympic tournament was held in London in 1908 and water polo has been an integral part of the Olympic Games ever since. From Sydney 2000 a women's tournament will also be held.

Diving

Diving

The high diver had their Olympic premiere in St. Louis in 1904 . The jumpers followed at the following games in London . Women have competed in diving since Stockholm in 1912 and in artificial diving since Antwerp in 1920

The competitions have been fixed since 1920 - two in each of the two disciplines.

Synchronized swimming

Synchronized swimming

Synchronized swimming has been on the program of the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Olympic Games and, in addition to rhythmic gymnastics, is exclusively reserved for women.

Traditionally, the United States , Canada and Japan have been very strong in synchronized swimming and won all competitions from 1984 to 1996. Russia has dominated the sport since then and has won all competitions since 2000.
