The aim of the founding was to accelerate the standardization of the swimming competitions, which were sometimes quite bizarre.
At the beginning of 2010, FINA had 202 national member associations spread across five continental swimming associations. The association is based in Lausanne . The current president of FINA is Julio César Maglione from Uruguay.
The association organizes numerous international competitions, including the swimming world championships since 1973 and the short course world championships since 1993 . It is also responsible for the recognition of records, although today only competitions organized directly by member associations are evaluated, while in the past sometimes times were also recorded by third-party organizers who had approval from a member association.
