The 14th Swimming World Championships took place from July 16 to 31, 2011 in the Chinese city of Shanghai .

The World Swimming Federation (FINA) awarded the event on March 23, 2007 on the sidelines of the 2007 World Swimming Championships in Melbourne. Shanghai's application prevailed in the decisive vote against the candidacy from Doha ( Qatar ). In the run-up to the event, Durban ( South Africa ), Madrid ( Spain ), San Francisco ( United States ), Seoul ( South Korea ) and the Japanese Swimming Association - without specifying a city as the venue - had expressed their interest in hosting the event. It was the first time that China hosted the World Cup.

The venue for the World Championships was the Oriental Sports Center in Pudong, right next to the Expo site . The complex includes the indoor stadium for pool and synchronized swimming competitions with a capacity of 12,000, the natatorium for water polo tournaments, Jinshan City Beach for open water swimming competitions and the outdoor diving pool stadium for diving competitions, which can accommodate 5,000 spectators.

Ryan Lochte was the first swimmer to set a long-distance world record since the high-tech suits were banned at the end of 2009. He improved his own world record from the 2009 World Championships in Rome by a tenth of a second in the 200 meter medley in 1: 54.00 minutes . On the final day, Sun Yang set the second world record in the world championships in the 1500 meter freestyle. It surpassed Grant Hackett's longest existing world record from 2001.

César Cielo caused a scandal . The Brazilian pool swimmer tested positive for the doping agent furosemide in March 2011 . Nevertheless, the Brazilian swimming federation CBDA and the International Court of Justice (CAS) acquitted the defending champion in the 50 and 100 meter freestyle and thus enabled participation in the World Cup. Cielo secured the title over the 50-meter butterfly and 50-meter freestyle course during the world championships.

During the competitions, the German swimmer Britta Steffen , defending champion on the 50- and 100-meter freestyle course, said after a disappointing 16th place in the preliminaries over the 100-meter freestyle and a slow individual time in the 100-meter freestyle relay all further starts.

Schedule and sports

A total of 66 competitions were held, one more than at the 2009 World Championships . The men competed in 29 competitions, the women in 36. New to the program was a mixed team competition in open water swimming, in which two men and one woman have to cover five kilometers together. Otherwise the competition program was identical to the previous World Championships.
