István Hunor Mate (born March 13, 1983 in Csongrád , Hungary ) is an Austrian swimmer . He swims for the Carinthian club Wolfsberger SV .

Life

Born in Hungary, he currently lives and studies in Tuscaloosa , Alabama , USA at the University of Alabama Athletics . In Austria he swam for a long time at the SC in the Theresianum until he switched to Wolfsberger SV in early 2009.

Mate appeared for Austria for the first time at the 2007 European Short Course Championships in Debrecen . There he was 11th over the 100 m chest distance , 13th over the 50 m chest and 16th over the 200 m chest.

In Eindhoven , at the European Swimming Championships in 2008 , he sensationally and surprisingly reached the final in the 200 m breaststroke, in which he finally reached 8th place.

At the short course world championships in Manchester in 2008 , he did not succeed, as he did a few weeks earlier in Eindhoven, to improve decisively to reach a final. His best placement in these competitions was a 19th place over the 200 m chest distance.
