The 2009 European Short Course Swimming Championships in swimming took place from 10. bis 13. December 2009 in Istanbul ( Turkey ) and will have the European Swimming Federation LEN organized. The competitions took place in the Abdi İpekçi Arena , built in 1986 , in which two 25-meter pools were temporarily set up for training and competitions.

Innovations and special features

Some innovations were used for the first time in these competitions. For example, for the first time not only all ten lanes in the pool were occupied by swimmers in the heats, but also in the semi-finals and finals. This was previously the case, as the swimmers on the outer lanes were considered to be disadvantaged because of the stronger waves.

Other innovations concerned the starting blocks at the pool edge. They were more inclined than before and were adjustable in five levels. Above all, you should reduce the reaction time and increase the leverage when pushing.

In addition, these European short course championships were the last major international competitions in which the modern full body suits, with which 127 new world records were swum in 2009 , were allowed, as they have not been approved by FINA since January 1, 2010 . A total of 14 world and 12 European records as well as 13 German and 14 Austrian records were swum during the competitions .

The most successful swimmer in Istanbul was the Russian Stanislaw Donez , who won four European championship titles over 50 meters, 100 meters and 200 meters back and over 4 × 50 meters. Over 100 meters back, the fastest race ever swum over this distance, he and his compatriot Arkadi Vjattschanin achieved the unique feat of becoming European champion at the same time in a world record time. The most successful swimmer of these competitions was Inge Dekker from the Netherlands , who won a total of five gold medals in the 100 meter freestyle, 50 meter and 100 meter butterfly, as well as together with the 4 × 50 meter freestyle and 4 × 50 meter medley relay.

It is also noteworthy that both Switzerland with Patrizia Humplik and Liechtenstein , which competed for the first time at the European Short Course Championships , with Julia Hassler only competed with one swimmer, and that Austria with 20 swimmers was the largest international contingent to date Swimming competitions posed.

The German swimmer Thomas Rupprath was able to prolong his series of winning at least one medal at each of the 13 European short course championships held since 1996 by becoming vice European champion over 50 meters back and with the German 4 × 50 meter relay relay. The series of the Slovenian swimmer Peter Mankoč , for the tenth time in a row, so since the short course European championships in 2000 in Valencia , to become European champion over 100 meters could not be continued with reaching third place in these competitions.
