The 23rd European Swimming Championships took place in Seville from August 19 to August 24, 1997 and were organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN).
The 1997 European Swimming Championships included competitions in swimming , art and tower diving , synchronized swimming and open water swimming . The two water polo tournaments took place for the last time parallel to the European Swimming Championships.
