Career

Mark Veens took part in three Summer Olympics from 1996 to 2004 . He qualified only as part of the Dutch 4 × 100 meter freestyle and in 2000 in Sydney additionally for the 4 × 100 meter relay.

In 1996 in Atlanta he took fifth place together with Pie Geelen , Martin van der Spoel and Pieter van den Hoogenband in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle.

Four years later, in Sydney in 2000, he was unable to repeat this result with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay because he was disqualified with the relay in the preliminary run. To do this, he swam in the run-up to the Dutch 4 × 100 meter layer relay, which ultimately came in fourth.

In 2004 in Athens he won his only Olympic medal with the silver medal in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle. He started in the run-up instead of Pieter van den Hoogenband, who had spared himself for the final.

At the European Short Course Championships in 1998 in Sheffield , 2003 in Dublin and 2005 in Trieste , he improved the European record three times with the Dutch 4 × 50 meter freestyle relay . He was also able to set a new European record on the long track with the Dutch 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay, at the European Swimming Championships in Istanbul in 1999 and at the 2001 World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka .
