European swimming championships have been held by the European swimming federation LEN since 1926 . Initially, there was no uniform cycle, from 1950 a four-year rhythm and since 1981 the EM has been held every two years with one exception (from 1999 to 2000, with regard to the swimming world championships, the odd to the even year was changed). But that also means that the European Championship overlaps with the Olympic Games every four years , which is reflected in weaker starting fields and times.

The focus of the EM is on the swimming competitions on the 50-meter lane. In addition, competitions in diving , synchronized swimming and open water swimming are held. Until 1997, the men's (since 1926) and women's (since 1987) water polo tournaments were also part of the European Swimming Championships. Since 1999 these have been held separately in a double event. The 1974 European Championships in synchronized swimming and the 2008 European Open Water Championships were also held separately; the same applied to the 2012 European Diving Championships .
