The 35th European Swimming Championships were originally supposed to take place in the Hungarian capital Budapest in 2020 and have been postponed to May 10-23, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All swimming sports ( water polo , pool swimming , water jumping , synchronized swimming , cliff jumping , open water swimming , masters) are carried out throughout the year.

In January the European championships for water polo players , in May the European championships (open class and masters) for pool swimmers, water divers and synchronized swimmers will take place in Budapest. The open water competitions are held at Lake Balaton at the end of June. This was decided by the European swimming federation LEN on July 9, 2016 at its board meeting in Budapest.

After 1926 , 2006 and 2010 the fourth European Swimming Championships are taking place in Budapest. For the first time, all swimming sports will be organized by a national swimming federation. Budapest will host the 2017 Swimming World Championships three years earlier .
