The 31st European Swimming Championships took place from May 21 to 27, 2012 in Debrecen ( Hungary ) and were organized by the European Swimming Federation ( LEN ). This was the fifth time that Hungary was the host country of this event after the title fights were held in the capital Budapest in 1926 , 1958 , 2006 and 2010 . At the same time, it was the fifth major swimming competition for the country in seven years.
Originally, the European championships were supposed to take place in Antwerp ( Belgium ). In mid-February 2012, however, financial problems on the part of the Belgian organizers and the relocation of the swimming pool competitions to Debrecen became known. The Hungarian organizers had previously given an assurance that they would meet the original date of the event. The diving competitions also planned in Antwerp took place from May 15 to 21 as separate championships in Eindhoven ( Netherlands ), where the European Championships in synchronized swimming (May 23 to 27) will also be held. The European Open Water Championships were awarded to the Italian city of Piombino in December 2011 , which will host them in September.
The European Swimming Championships coincided with the training-intensive period of preparation for the highlight of the season, the Summer Olympics in London (pool competitions: July 28th to August 4th 2012). For many participants it was also the last chance to qualify for the games. Although the European Swimming Federation had announced a record number of 570 swimmers from 44 of the 51 LEN member nations, some of the favored athletes did not take part. These included, for example, the Dutchman Ranomi Kromowidjojo (three-time medalist at the 2011 swimming world championships ) and the Frenchman Yannick Agnel ( 2010 European champion in the 400-meter freestyle). The Frankfurter Rundschau criticized the fact that this would make the core Olympic sport of swimming a few sizes smaller, to the "level of a swimming festival" .
At the opening of the competitions, a film was made to commemorate the Norwegian swimmer Alexander Dale Oen . The world and two-time European champion over the 100-meter chest distance died on April 30, 2012 during an altitude training camp in the United States and would have celebrated his 27th birthday on May 21, the opening of the European Swimming Championships. The Norwegian participants honored him by wearing black swimming caps with his initials ("ADO").
For Germany, which took second place behind hosts Hungary in the national rankings, it was the most successful European swimming championships since the championships in Berlin (2002) with eight gold, six silver and three bronze medals . Austria (a bronze medal for Markus Rogan over 200 meter medley) and Switzerland (no medal win) could not improve compared to the previous EM. The most successful participant was the Hungarian butterfly and layer specialist László Cseh (3 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals). The most successful German starters were freestyle swimmers Britta Steffen (3 gold and one silver medal) and Paul Biedermann (3 gold medals).
Competition venue
The pool swimming competitions took place in the Debrecen Swimming Pool Complex. The facility was specifically for the 2007 organized European Short Course Swimming Championships erected. The indoor swimming pool has a 50-meter swimming pool with Olympic dimensions and a 25-meter warm-up pool. The hall offers a total of 2200 visitors.

Most of the participants came from Italy (49 registered athletes), followed by hosts Hungary (36) and Germany (35). According to the regulations of the European Swimming Federation, a maximum of four athletes from the same country could take part in a competition, a maximum of two in the semi-finals and finals.
