Markus Deibler (born January 28, 1990 in Biberach an der Riss ) is a former German swimmer .

Career

Deibler's main routes were short freestyle routes and multi-layer routes . He passed his Abitur at the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium Biberach in 2009 and studied industrial engineering at the HAW Hamburg from October 2010 . In October 2009 he moved from his hometown club TG Biberach (gymnastics community Biberach) to the Hamburg swimming club .

Markus Deibler set seven year-old records in age groups 16 to 18, including five on the 200-meter multi-layered courses. In 2006 he won the title over 200 meter medley at the German junior championships. The following year he won the title in the 100-meter course and the 4 × 100-meter freestyle at the European Youth Championships.

Since 2007 he has also been successfully competing in the senior sector. At the German championships he won the title in the 200 meter medley and came second in the 100 meter medley. He was also the winner of the 200 meter medley at the South German Championships and also competed for the first time at the European Championships. There he won gold in the 4 × 50 meter individual medley relay. In 2008 he again won the title in the 200 meter medley at the German championships and qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . There he was not very successful and was eliminated in advance.

He made his national and international breakthrough in 2010 when he surprisingly beat Paul Biedermann over 200 meters freestyle at the German short course championships in Wuppertal and shortly afterwards won both the 100 and 200 meter medley at the European short course championships in Eindhoven. There was also the gold medal in the 4 × 50-meter relay and second place in the 4 × 50-meter freestyle relay. A few weeks later, with a new German record, he won the silver medal in the 100 meter medley at the short course world championships in Dubai .

After several years without international success, Deibler won gold for the first time at the short course world championships in Doha in December 2014 and set his first world record in the 100 meter medley with 0: 50.66 minutes. It was the first swimming world record for a German after the ban on performance-enhancing swimsuits five years earlier. Just nine days after setting the world record, he announced that he would like to devote himself to other projects that he was retiring from competitive sports. Deibler has been running an ice cream parlor in Hamburg-St. Pauli ; meanwhile he is expanding this mainstay. In 2017 he performed with his company on the entertainment show The Lion's Den .
