At the XXIX. During the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing , 34 swimming competitions were held. Of these, 32 competitions took place on the 50-meter track and two competitions in long-distance swimming .

Qualification guidelines

The Beijing National Swimming Center , also known as the Water Cube, where the 2008 Olympic swimming competitions were held

In the individual competitions, each National Olympic Committee was allowed to start two athletes if they had all achieved the A standard or one athlete if he only achieved the B standard. In the relay competitions, a maximum of one team consisting of six athletes per National Olympic Committee was allowed to start. The 12 best-placed teams of the 2007 World Swimming Championships in Melbourne and the four fastest, not directly qualified teams in the period from March 2007 to July 2008 were qualified for each relay . National Olympic Committees, from which no athletes had qualified for a competition, were entitled to to field a male and / or a female athlete for a competition. Around 400 men and 400 women, a total of 800 athletes, took part in the swimming competitions. From March 15, 2007, A and B standard values were in effect in the individual disciplines.

In the long-distance swim over 10 kilometers in open water, which was held for the first time at the Olympic Games, 25 men and women each were allowed to start. Each nation was allowed to nominate a maximum of two starters per gender, but only if both finished in the top ten at the World Championships. The first ten were qualified over the 10-kilometer course at the 2008 World Endurance Championship in Seville . There were also the winners of the five continental championships. If the nation of the continental champions had already qualified with at least one starter via the world championship result, the top-placed athlete from a National Olympic Committee who had not yet qualified moved up. Another starting place went to the host country China , if this starting place was not already won. The remaining starting positions were swum in a qualifying race in Beijing in June 2008. In this qualifying race, all the not yet qualified National Olympic Committees were allowed to participate again with two starters, but a maximum of one of them could qualify. These qualification criteria applied to women and men.
