Cullen Jones (born February 29, 1984 in Bronx , New York ) is an American freestyle swimmer .

Career

He is trained by David Marsh at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club in Charlotte , North Carolina . He made his first appearance on the international swimming scene in 2006 at the Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria . He studied English and psychology at North Carolina State University . In the summer of 2006 he signed an advertising contract with Nike and became a professional swimmer.

At the Pan Pacific Championships 2006 he set a meeting record for the 50 m freestyle. He was also part of the successful 4 × 100 m freestyle relay (with Michael Phelps , Jason Lezak and Neil Walker ) which won a new world record. Just one year later, with the same teammates and over the same distance, he won the gold medal at the 2007 World Swimming Championships in Melbourne .

Jones is the first African American to hold a swimming world record (4 × 100 m freestyle relay). He is also only the second African American to be part of a US Olympic swimming team after Anthony Ervin . At the Olympic Games in the USA in 2008 , Jones broke the American record over the 50 m freestyle distance, which Garret Weber-Gale took away from him the next day .

Jones won the gold medal on the 4 × 100 m freestyle course at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing . Four years later at the Summer Olympics in London he won two silver medals each in the 50 m freestyle and with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay.
