The Olympic Trials in the United States in 2008 ( Engl. : 2008 United States Olympic Team Trials ) in swimming were to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing held. These eliminations were held at the Qwest Center Omaha in Omaha , Nebraska . The first and second place finishers of each gender and across each swimming distance qualified as part of the United States Olympic swimming team. In addition, all winners are US swimming champions at the same time.

The city of Omaha and the state of Nebraska in general want to establish themselves as a popular and modern region in the long term by hosting such major sporting events as the Olympiatrials.

The most burning question before these competitions was not how many world records are swum, but what quality they are, as the USA is performing for the first time since the introduction of the new swim suit LZR-Racer from swimwear manufacturer Speedo in its strongest line-up. After all, the US swimmers set nine new world records, 21 American records and 19 new record times that were swum on US soil.

After the first competitions of these competitions, namely over the 400 m individual medley, which were decided in world record time for men and women, the five-time Olympic champion Gary Hall junior caused a stir, because he was not so much the new swimsuits, but rather doping for this record flood of the last one responsible for six months. Not only the US swimming stars expressed themselves angrily about this allegation, but also the top Australian swimmers, such as Lisbeth Trickett , announced their displeasure with this statement. AustraliaAustralia

The 33-year-old Garry Hall Jr., who was fourth in the 50 m freestyle and thus missed the Olympic participation, also ended his very successful career with this race.

The biggest stars of this event were among the men Michael Phelps , Aaron Peirsol and Ryan Lochte . Phelps was able to qualify for five medal decisions with two new world records. Peirsol qualified in an impressive manner with two world records over the back distances. Ryan Lochte qualified for three competitions in Beijing. He was particularly convincing over the individual distances where he fought exciting duels with Michael Phelps. However, the disappointing result with third place over the 100 m back distance of the short course world record holder of this route clouded his performance.

Brendan Hansen caused the greatest disappointment . Over the 100 m breaststroke he made it safely to the Olympic qualification and missed his own world record by only eleven hundredths in the run-up. But the former world record holder and two-time world champion over the 200 m chest distance could not prevail over this distance against his training partners and students Scott Spann and Eric Shanteau and ended up only on the disappointing fourth place.

In the women’s category, Katie Hoff , Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin were particularly convincing. Katie Hoff in particular lived up to expectations by qualifying for five competitions with a world record. Coughlin, who prevailed in two competitions, also set a new world record. The appearance of Dara Torres was watched with great excitement as the 41-year-old competed in the Summer Olympics for the fifth time with the qualification in the 50 m freestyle and 100 m freestyle in Beijing. After winning the 100 m freestyle, however, she announced that she would not compete over this distance at the Olympic Games in order to be able to concentrate fully on the 50 m freestyle and the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. The beneficiary of this retreat was Lacey Nymeyer , who moved up to the US Olympic swimming team as third place over this distance.

Margaret Hoelzer , who qualified for two Olympic competitions and sensationally won the world record over 200 m backs from Kirsty Coventry ( ZIM ) , provided the biggest positive surprise for the women . ZimbabweZimbabwe
