In 2005 Kim Vandenberg won her first medal in international competitions with the silver medal on her special 200 meter butterfly course at the Summer Universiade 2005 in Izmir .

She achieved the greatest triumph of her career in an individual discipline at the 2007 Swimming World Championships in Melbourne , when she won the silver medal over the 200 meter butterfly.

The qualification for the Olympic Summer Games 2008 in Beijing at the Trials was mixed for Vandenberg, as she qualified on the one hand as fifth in the 200 meter freestyle for the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay of the Olympic team, but on the other hand on her special course, the 200 meter butterfly Ditte narrowly missed qualification behind Elaine Breeden and Kathleen Hersey . At the Olympic Games itself, she won the bronze medal with the 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay, with Vandenberg only starting in the run-up.
