Rebecca Soni (born March 18, 1987 in Freehold , New Jersey ) is a former American breaststroke swimmer and multiple world record holder . She achieved three Olympic victories in 2008 and 2012 and four world championship titles in 2009 and 2011 , both alone and with the individual medley relay .

Career

Rebecca Soni is studying communication science at the University of Southern California and started for the Trojan Swim Club . Before swimming, Soni started doing gymnastics. She had her national and international breakthrough in 2005, since then she has also been part of the US national team. In the USA she won the 200m breaststroke title, at the Summer Universiade 2005 she won the silver medals in the 200m and 100m breaststroke. At the 2006 World Short Course Championships in Shanghai , Soni just missed a medal in fourth place on her parade course of 200 m chest. There she won the title in the US championships as well as over half as long the following year.

At the US Trials in 2008 , Soni qualified fourth over the 100 m breaststroke and as the winner over double the distance for the Olympic Games in Beijing . There she competed in both races. She won silver over 100 m behind Leisel Jones from Australia, who won in a world record time . She left the Australian behind over 200 m and won the gold medal in a world record time of 2: 20.22 minutes.

At the Olympic Games in London , she swam the 200 m chest in the semifinals in 2: 20.00 minutes and beat Annamay Pierse's old world record by 12 hundredths of a second. Just one day later, she improved this to 2:19:59 minutes in the final.

In January 2014, she announced her resignation.
