Luo Xuejuan ( Chinese  罗雪娟 , Pinyin Luó Xuějuān ; born January 26, 1984 in Hangzhou , Zhejiang ) is a Chinese swimmer , world and Olympic champion . Her specialty is the breaststroke .

Career

Luo Xuejuan first attracted international attention at the 2001 World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka when she became world champion in the 50 and 100 meter chest. In addition, she was able to win a bronze medal in the 200-meter chest and one as part of the Chinese 4-by-100-meter relay. In December of the same year, she set a new world record for the 50 meter chest in Shanghai . Just a month later, in Paris , she managed to swim nine hundredths of a second faster. However, this record only lasted four days before the Swede Emma Igelström in Stockholm improved this record by another five hundredths of a second.

In 2002, at the short course world championships in Moscow , she could not win over 50 meters chest against Igelström and became vice world champion. She also won a bronze medal in the 100 meter chest and with the 4 x 100 meter individual relay.

In addition to the three world championships at the 2003 World Swimming Championships in Barcelona over 50 and 100 meters chest, as well as the 4 x 100 meter relay, the Olympic victory at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens is one of her career highlights.

After Athens she was unable to win another major title. One reason for this is the injury to the ankle, which prevented a better placement than fourth place over 100 meters and seventh place over 50 meters chest at the 2005 World Championships in Montreal .
