The 9th World Swimming Championships took place from July 16 to 29, 2001 in Fukuoka and were organized by the World Swimming Federation FINA . The competition venues were the Marine Fair (swimming and synchronized swimming), the Fukuoka Prefectural Pool (art and high diving), the Hakata-no Mori Center (water polo men), the Nishi indoor swimming pool (water polo women) and the beach of Momochi (long distance swimming). The overall impression of the event suffered from the overall high costs for everyone involved as well as the fact that the competition venues were sometimes quite widely scattered in the city, which was detrimental to Yokohama's application for the 2009 World Cup.
