The 13th Swimming World Championships took place from July 17th to August 2nd, 2009 in the Italian capital Rome . The World Swimming Federation (FINA) awarded the event on July 16, 2005 on the sidelines of the 2005 World Swimming Championships in Montreal . The application of Rome prevailed against the candidacies of Athens , Moscow and Yokohama . This was the second time the city had hosted a World Cup after 1994 .
The venues were the Foro Italico and the Lido di Ostia .
The 2009 World Swimming Championships were the last before wearing high-tech swimming suits was banned from 2010 . A total of 42 world records were set in 31 disciplines at these championships. More than three quarters of the 40 possible long-track world records were broken. 15 of the 31 are still valid today (as of August 8, 2016). 14 of the 42 world records set were already achieved in the runs of the semi-finals.

Participating Nations
A total of 2556 athletes from 185 countries took part in the swimming world championships.
Problems
At the beginning of the World Championships, there were wind problems in Ostia. Violent storms, which caused severe damage in the start and finish area of the open water swimming competitions, forced the organizers to consider moving these competitions to Lake Bracciano . In the end, only the start dates for 5 km and 10 km were postponed to a later point in time in order to temporarily repair the damage. In order to guarantee a start despite the launch bridge destroyed by the storm, the swimmers were lined up on a temporary leash and sent off.
There were further problems in the run-up to the pool swimming competitions in connection with the initially assembled starting blocks , which the FINA only approved for 2010. The organizers said that these starting blocks, which have a greater incline and thus enable the swimmers to push off more powerfully, were only installed for test purposes.
Swimming men
Freestyle
- One of the highlights of the Swimming World Cup was the men's 200 m freestyle final. The German Paul Biedermann achieved the best lead time . The big favorite on this route, however, was the American Michael Phelps , who won 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing the year before . Phelps has been unbeaten on the 200m freestyle course for 5 years. Biedermann sensationally won the race with a body length ahead of Phelps and swam a new world record with 1:42:00. It was also the second world championship title for Biedermann, after having won the 400 m freestyle title two days earlier, also in a new world record time.
- The fastest swimmer in the World Cup was César Cielo Filho from Brazil. He won both the 50 m freestyle and the 100 m freestyle race. The German Britta Steffen achieved the same feat in the women's category.
