Marco Koch (born January 25, 1990 in Darmstadt ) is a German swimmer . Marco Koch is a breaststroke swimmer and starts for SG Frankfurt. He is looked after by Dirk Lange and Shila Sheth. Until August 2018 he worked with Alexander Kreisel (Trainer of the Year 2014 in Hesse) and until then started for the DSW Darmstadt. He was then taken over by Henning Lambertzcoached before joining Dirk Lange at the end of 2019. Country trainer Shila Sheth continues to work on the pool edge. Koch was European champion in 2014 and world champion in the 200-meter chest in 2015 On November 20, 2016, he swam a short course world record over 200 meters chest, which Kirill Prigoda now holds.

International youth championships

At the age of 18, Marco Koch won his first international medal at the 2008 World Youth Championships in Monterrey on the long track, when he was vice-junior world champion over 100 meters and 200 meters chest. Three weeks later he won a complete set of medals on the chest courses at the European Youth Championships in Belgrade : gold over 200 meters, silver over 100 meters and bronze over 50 meters chest.

International short course championships

At the European Short Course Championships in 2008 he won his first medal in the open class when he won silver in the layer relay together with Thomas Rupprath , Johannes Dietrich and Steffen Deibler . Two years later he became European champion at the 2010 European Short Course Championships over 200 meters breaststroke. In December 2013 he won an international medal in the open class for the first time on his 100-meter breaststroke branch: at the European Short Course Championships in 2013 in Herning , he was runner-up in the 100-meter breaststroke in a new German record time and took third place over 200 meters breastfeeding, also a new one German record. In 2015 Koch repeated his 2010 victory over the 200-meter chest and was again European champion at the 2015 European Short Course Championships in Netanya . He improved his own German record with 2: 00.53 minutes and was only five hundredths above the world record. In the 100-meter breaststroke final two days later, Koch became European champion over this distance for the first time in another German record time. After the silver medal at the European Short Course Championships in Copenhagen in 2017 , he won bronze in Glasgow in 2019 .

Koch has participated in short course world championships several times . At the short course world championships in 2010 he was fourth over 200 meters chest and just missed the bronze medal. At the short course world championships in 2012 in Istanbul , he was only six tenths behind the third placed seventh over 200 meters breast. In Doha at the 2014 Short Course World Championships , he won the silver medal with only 42 hundredths behind his long-time rival Dániel Gyurta . Two years later he became world champion for the first time on his 100 meter chest branch at the 2016 World Short Course Championships in Windsor. Just one day later, he also won the world title on his parade route 200 meters chest. Over 200 m breaststroke he won another medal with bronze at the 2018 Short Course World Championships in Hangzhou, China.

Koch takes part in many international meetings. He is a regular guest at the FINA World Cup series . In 2011 he took third place in the final bill after seven individual meetings. In 2014, after participating in 4 of the 7 stations, he was able to take fifth place in the final bill.

International long-track championships

On the long track, Koch took part in several European championships . In Budapest in 2010 he was seventh over 200 meters breast. Two years later he won the silver medal in Debrecen on the same route behind the Hungarian Dániel Gyurta. In addition, he only missed the bronze medal over 100 meters chest by six hundredths when he finished fourth. At the title fights in Berlin in 2014 , he was European champion over 200 meters chest with a new German record. Two years later he won the silver medal over this route in London . He was unable to qualify for the 2018 European Championships .

For the first time, Koch took part in world championships in Rome in 2009 . Here he was eliminated in the semifinals with twelfth place over 200 meters chest. At the 2011 World Championships he was not considered by the DSV . Two years later he became vice world champion in Barcelona on his parade route 200 meters chest. He only had to admit defeat to his closest competitor, Dániel Gyurta. At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan , he won the gold medal over 200 meters in 2: 07.76 minutes.

Olympic games

Koch was part of the DSV squad at the 30th Summer Olympics in London in 2012. After qualifying for a semi-final in eleventh place, he was thrown out there in 13th place behind his compatriot Christian vom Lehn .

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Koch qualified in the semifinals with a time of 2: 08.12 minutes as the seventh fastest for the final over 200 meters chest. There he finished 7th in the Olympic victory of Kazakhs Dmitri Balandin in a time of 2: 08.00 min.

He qualified as the first pool swimmer for the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo in January 2020. Postponing the Olympic Games to 2021 merely postpones his goal of successfully participating in his third Olympic Games.

Others

It is known for its extremely good gliding ability in connection with strong dolphin leg kicks after start and turn. He became German champion over 200 meters butterfly at the German short course championships in 2012 by diving at least 10 meters on each of the eight lanes, which only very few top athletes manage.

Marco Koch is a student at the SRH FernHochschule Riedlingen .

In the inaugural season of the International Swimming League 2019, Koch competed for the New York Breakers.

Koch is in a relationship with the swimmer Reva Foos, she also starts for SG Frankfurt .

From June 28, 2009 to July 30, 2009 he held the European record on the long track over 200 meters chest with his time from the German Championships in Berlin in 02: 08.33 minutes.
