Ross Murdoch (born January 14, 1994 in Alexandria , West Dunbartonshire ) is a British breaststroke swimmer .

Career

Ross Murdoch first drew attention to himself in 2012 when he reached the final of his first British championships in the 200m breaststroke and undercut his personal best by seven seconds. At the Junior European Championships, he then won silver over 50 and 200 m breasts. In 2013 he was already British champion over 100 m breaststroke and made his international debut at the World Championships in Barcelona . There he reached the semi-finals over 100 m chest and finished eleventh.

In 2014 at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow he won gold in the 200 m breaststroke in 2: 07.30 minutes, which was a new best time for the Commonwealth Games and was only just over the world record of 2: 07.01 minutes by Akihiro Yamaguchi . He also won bronze in the 100 m breaststroke. At the subsequent European Championships in Berlin , he won silver in the 100 m chest behind Adam Peaty and over 200 m chest behind Marco Koch .

At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan , he won his first World Championship medal with bronze over 100 m breaststroke behind Adam Peaty and Cameron van der Burgh and improved his own Scottish record to 59.09 seconds. He was also used in the heats for the British 4 × 100 m individual relay relay for men and in mixed. In 2016 Murdoch won a complete set of medals at the European Championships in London over the chest courses with gold over 200 m, silver over 100 m and bronze over 50 m. He also swam in the run-up to the season over 4 × 100 m individual medley, which won gold in the final.

Murdoch is multiple British and Scottish Masters and trains with Ben Higson at the University of Stirling .
