Klaus Bodinger (born May 14, 1932 in Breslau ; † April 6, 1994 in Strasbourg , France ) was a German swimmer . In 1954 he became European champion.

Bodinger was trained by Herbert Neweklowsky, who played water polo at Spandau before World War II. In 1952 Bodinger won his first GDR title in the 200-meter breaststroke for BSG Stahl Nord-Leipzig. The following year he started for BSG Motor Gohlis-Nord . He again won the GDR title in the 200-meter chest and took second place in the 100-meter chest and with the 4 x 200-meter chest relay. After he had improved the GDR record on the 200-meter chest course to 2: 40.0 minutes in 1954, he swam at the European Swimming Championships in Turin in 1954 in 2: 40.9 minutes and won the title.

Neweklowsky and Bodinger had already made contact with West German officials during the European championships, and in early 1955 they left the GDR and joined the Karlsruhe swimming club Neptun in 1899 . At the German Championships in 1955 , Bodinger won his first title in the west over 200 meters chest. Two more titles followed in 1957 and 1958 . Bodinger also won a short course title and two season titles for the Karlsruhe team. At the European Swimming Championships in Budapest in 1958 , he won the bronze medal in 2: 41.4 minutes behind Leonid Kolesnikow from the Soviet Union and the Italian Roberto Lazzari .

At the end of the 1950s, Bodinger ended his sporting career and looked for a job as an office worker. Bodinger died on Easter Monday 1994 in a hotel room in Strasbourg.
