Herbert Klein (swimmer)
Herbert Klein (born March 25, 1923 in Breslau ; † September 25, 2001 in Munich ) was a German swimmer .
During the Second World War , Klein served as a combat swimmer , after a deployment near Rimini he was taken prisoner by the British in September 1944 . Herbert Klein became European champion over 200 m breaststroke in 1950 and swam three world records and 21 German records in his career . At the Olympic Games in Helsinki in 1952 , the VfVS Munich swimmer won the bronze medal behind John Davies and Bowen Stassforth on his parade route . Four years later in Melbourne he was disqualified on the same route for a wrong leg kick. Klein was voted German Sportsman of the Year in 1950 .
