Henry Maske (born January 6, 1964 in Treuenbrietzen ) is a former German boxer who celebrated great success as an amateur in the 1980s, including as an Olympic middleweight champion in 1988 and then was world champion among professionals. Because of his cultured appearance in public and because of his boxing style, he was nicknamed Gentleman and achieved great popularity throughout Germany . Mask is one of the co-founders of the so-called boxing boom that hit Germany in the early 1990s.
amateur
Southerner Henry Maske began his career in Jüterbog , where he did his first boxing training at the age of seven. He laid the foundation for his later success as an amateur boxer in the GDR . Between 1972 and 1978 he was trained by Hans Hörnlein at BSG Motor Ludwigsfelde. Mask then trained at the ASK Vorwärts Frankfurt (Oder) under the direction of the then head coach Manfred Wolke and Dietrich Bleck and was the last lieutenant of the National People's Army as a sports instructor . Mask was a bearer of the Patriotic Order of Merit .
At his first World Championships in Reno ( USA ) in 1986 , Henry Maske won the silver medal. He only had to bow to the American Darin Allen in the final, with quite a few observers speaking of a judgment influenced by home advantage. In 1988 Henry Maske became Olympic middleweight champion and beat his future opponent among the professionals, the Canadian Egerton Marcus , in the final and Christopher Sande in the semifinals . Since the Cubans boycotted the Olympic Games in Seoul out of solidarity with North Korea , there was no clash between Henry Maske and his then feared opponent Ángel Espinosa , against whom he played in three comparisons, including the World Cup final in 1987 and the final of the Chemistry Cup in 1988, was defeated every time.
But at the World Championships in Moscow a year later, this hurdle was also overcome. Henry Maske, meanwhile promoted to the light heavyweight division, defeated the big favorite and defending champion Pablo Romero from Cuba in the final , thus preventing the Cuban from a title hat-trick . Until he switched to the professional camp in March 1990, Henry Maske was considered the measure of all things in the light heavyweight division. His record: 163 wins in 181 fights.

Professional career
Mask decided in 1990 for an offer from the West German promoter Wilfried Sauerland , who had also met his competitor Klaus-Peter Kohl beforehand. From 1990, mask fought as a professional in the light heavyweight division . He played his first professional fight on May 9, 1990 in London . He beat opponents like ex-European champion Tom Collins, ex- WBA title holder Leslie Stewart, WBA challenger Mike Peak and Yawe Davis in build-up matches. The boxing event in September 1992 at Documenta IX in Kassel was a “milestone” for his image in public and for the boom in professional boxing , according to Maske later. He fought a fight against Samson Cohen at the art event, and Axel Schulz and other boxers also got into the ring at the Documenta. “After that there was a talk show with intellectuals who all said how fascinating, archaic, inspiring, how fantastic boxing is. That was a huge bang back then, and we were suddenly perceived in a completely different way, on a different intellectual level, "said Maske in 2014. Another important aspect that boosted the popularity of Mask and professional boxing as a whole was a" targeted heroization "by the broadcasting party TV broadcaster RTL , which organized the fights of Maskes and his stable colleagues as major events and staged them with a spectacle. This made professional boxing “socially acceptable, socially relevant and trendy”. For the end of February 1992 a European championship fight between Mask and Graciano Rocchigiani was planned, which was supposed to take place in the Berlin Deutschlandhalle , but was ultimately canceled because no agreement was reached on the wages of the two boxers.
On March 20, 1993 he became IBF world champion with a unanimous victory on points against the American "Prince" Charles Williams . Williams was number one in all independent journals like Ring Magazine and had held the title for more than five years. Mask won the fight unanimously on points in front of 6,200 spectators in the sold out Philipshalle in Düsseldorf , and another 2,000 people had to be turned away at the ticket offices. 3.1 million television viewers followed the broadcast. Mask determined the fight with his leading hand, convinced with good footwork and showed an "ideal mixture of security and aggressiveness". Mask received an exchange amounting to around 100,000 DM, and after the fight his manager Sauerland promised his protégé that Mask would "be able to make millions in the next three years."
By the end of 1996, mask defended his title ten times, including against the three undefeated mandatory challengers Ernesto Magdaleno , Duran Williams and Egerton Marcus and against Graciano Rocchigiani. The latter had previously been promoted to light heavyweight and had lost a title fight of the boxing association WBO against Chris Eubank in the super middleweight division in 1994 . The first meeting in May 1995 was the first World Cup fight in which two German professional boxers faced each other. The organizers had put the fight under the motto "A question of honor". Mask was assured a fee of 1.6 million DM and Rocchigiani 1.15 million DM for the fight. Rocchigiani presented the fight in advance as a dispute between East and West Germany, which the mask camp rejected and pointed to the sporting value of the fight. The duel should have taken place a year earlier, but Rocchigiani and his then manager Klaus-Peter Kohl had not been able to agree with Sauerland on the options in the event of Mask's defeat.
Rocchigiani showed a good performance in the Dortmund Westfalenhalle, which was packed with 13,000 spectators, and had the world champion on the verge of defeat in the ninth and twelfth rounds. In the twelfth round, Mask went to the ground, but since this happened in particular by pressing down Rocchigiani, the US referee did not count the world champion. In the course of the fight, the otherwise defensive mask let himself be carried away to an exchange of blows, which was untypical for him. At the end of the fight, Henry Maske was badly damaged. Due to a controversial point victory, he kept the IBF world championship belt. While Mask then assessed his victory with the words that he had landed the large number of hits, was the more consistent and determined the fight over long stretches, Rocchigiani said: “The show is on Maskes side, the money too. You have to win against Henry by knocking out . ” Jean-Marcel Nartz , then technical manager at the Sauerland stable, called the event“ one of the greatest fights Germany has ever experienced ”. The broadcast was followed by 13.18 million television viewers, which was a record for RTL at the time.
Half a year later, both boxers competed in the rematch that many had expected. This fight was classified in the run-up as "the preliminary climax of the new German boxing boom". Mask, which meanwhile had several advertising contracts, received a stock exchange of 1.6 million DM for the rematch. The broadcasting station RTL had called for record advertising prices of 360,000 DM per minute for the second duel between Mask and "Rocky". The Olympic Hall in Munich was sold out with 12,240 spectators. Mask said before the rematch that he wanted to prove to himself “that I'm not as bad as I was then.” Mask determined the fight with his leading hand and won unanimously on points, while Rocchigiani did not play to his strengths and appeared tense. With 17.6 million viewers and a market share of 73.6 percent, RTL achieved new record numbers. Celebrities such as Boris Becker , Michael Schumacher , Michael Stich and Heino attended the fight at the Ring, which, according to the Hamburger Abendblatt, is about "the." most pompous fight in German boxing history ”.
Another opponent of Mask, Iran Barkley , had made a name for himself in the USA after two victories against Thomas Hearns and the title win in three weight classes. However, after heavy premature defeats to James Toney and Adolpho Washington, he had eye problems and was no longer among the best in any independent rankings when Mask accepted him as a challenger. The fight ended prematurely because of the too clear superiority of the world champion.
Mask was very popular as a professional boxer in Germany, not least because of his level-headed manner inside and outside the boxing ring. He usually responded to verbal attacks by his opponents in the run-up to the fight with the sentence that he would give the answer in the ring. Henry Maskes fighting style reflected the so-called "Frankfurt School", whose founder is the mask trainer and Olympic champion from 1968 Manfred Wolke . This fighting style is very defensively shaped according to the motto: "It is not the one who lands the most hits that wins, but the one who gets the fewest hits." Maske's recipe for success was usually to deny his opponents the opportunity to open up To be able to prove exchange of blows. On the other hand, due to Mask's unorthodox boxing style, they often had to take surprisingly single clear hits, were then often behind on points halfway through the fight and therefore mostly sought the attack, which was a classic counter-boxer like Mask. This "route" gave Henry Maske the reputation of a serene ring strategist who boxed in a completely rational way. Due to the clear superiority at times, critical voices that questioned the class of some opponents increased over time. Mask voluntarily defended his title only twice against world-class opponents, namely in the rematch against Rocchigiani, who was not counted among the world's best before the first fight, but was upgraded due to his good performance despite defeat, and in the lost unification fight against Virgil Hill .
Henry Mask was criticized for allegedly not taking on many potential opponents. Among other things, there was no fight against Dariusz Michalczewski , whose promoter claimed to have contacted Mask several times. In the United States, Henry Maske's popularity was limited because his rational way of boxing was not spectacular enough for large-scale television marketing. He was also said to be more likely to compete against weaker opponents. His defensive fighting style was often interpreted as cowardice.
Before the World Championship unification fight with WBA title holder Virgil Hill held in the Munich Olympic Hall on November 23, 1996 , Maske had announced that he would end his boxing career. After 25 years of boxing, it was time to look around for new life tasks, Mask was quoted before the duel with Hill. The then Chancellor Helmut Kohl wished Mask all the best by telegram before the fight. Mask lost his IBF title to Hill in a difficult to assess, unclean fight on points. Hill convinced with his speed and was difficult for Mask to hit. Maske's otherwise strong right leading hand was not used much. In the course of the fight, the two boxers held and clamped. In the opinion of his coach Wolke, Mask against Hill showed his weakest world championship fight. Mask suspected a preference for the American after the fight: his announcement that he would finally end his career after the fight had meant that he did not fit into “the commercial concept”. "We were put where we belong in America - in the second class," said Maske after the fight.
Henry Maskes personality, fighting style and not least the media hype and the productions of the broadcaster RTL made boxing a social event in Germany and one of the leading figures of the reunified Germany. Mask, who during his wedding as a professional boxer in Germany had a degree of awareness among the population of 97 percent, was described as an "all-German idol" and "sporting main winner of the unit". Despite the staging of his fights, this spectacle remained alien to Mask for a long time: "Even today, Mask, always unshaven during fights, goes to work more like a delinquent with his head bowed", was the motto before his fight against Hill in November 1996. Cabaret artist and boxing reporter Werner Schneyder , who accompanied the mask fights on RTL as a commentator, described the Henry Maske brand in 1996 as a “high-profile combination of great technical ability, good looks and good sales.” Up to 18 million TV viewers followed his World Cup fights in front of the screens . The music tracks Conquest of Paradise and Time to Say Goodbye sold a total of nearly five million copies, with Time to Say Goodbye being dedicated to a mask when he took on his last fight. Both songs initially had no significant success either in Germany or worldwide. However, after they were played to Maskes Fights, both single versions broke the existing German sales records.
comeback
At the end of January 2006, Maske's last opponent, Virgil Hill, surprisingly made a comeback after switching to cruiserweight division . The 43-year-old defeated the Russian Valeri Brudow over twelve rounds unanimously on points in Atlantic City and thus won the vacant WBA world title. But this title is only subordinate; the regular WBA world champion was still the WBA super world champion Jean-Marc Mormeck , against whom Hill had already suffered two defeats. The renewed victory of his former conqueror in turn prompted Henry Maske to announce in an interview in July 2006 his comeback for a single revenge match against Hill. The planned return to the ring, however, met with incomprehension from both boxing experts and the general public. Due to ten years of lack of combat practice and his age of 42 for a competitive athlete, many doubted that Henry Maske would be able to stand up to an experienced opponent like Hill in a fight, even with targeted preparation. In fact, attempts to make comeback in boxing are often unsuccessful, even after a shorter period of abstinence than masking. Although Mask repeatedly asserted that the sporting reparation for his only defeat was the decisive factor in his comeback plans, the seriousness of his plan has been questioned again and again. The allegations with which Maske was confronted assumed that, in addition to the need for public attention, financial interests were the main reason for his return. As a result, there were a few fears that an unsuccessful comeback could damage Maskes' public reputation irreparably.
At the end of August 2006, Henry Maske announced that he would prepare for his fight against Hill in New York with Teddy Atlas , the former coach of Mike Tyson and Michael Moorer . Maskes former trainer Manfred Wolke had also offered his services, but received no approval from his promoter Wilfried Sauerland. In view of the failed comeback attempt by Axel Schulz in November 2006, however, Sauerland changed his mind. On December 18, Henry Maske announced that he would be separating from Teddy Atlas and training at Wolke again. During his preparation for the competition, Henry Maske completed several fights against active professional boxers in camera. These comparisons were made under competition conditions, i.e. with referees and point judges.
On March 31, 2007, the fight against Virgil Hill took place in the Munich Olympic Hall . Both sides agreed a weight limit of 86 kg for the fight, which was the upper limit of the cruiser weight applicable at the time of the 1996 fight. Virgil Hill, who had fought in the modified cruiser weight up to 91 kg since 2003, had to lose weight. Contrary to the prevailing opinion - according to a Forsa survey, only 25 percent of the viewers believed that the German would win - Mask surprised everyone with an impressive performance.
In the early stages, the audience saw a relatively even fight. Mask, who at least outwardly did not notice his long break, increasingly succeeded in developing slight advantages over his opponent as the fighting progressed. As a consequence, mask led relatively clearly with all three judges in the middle of the fight.
In the eighth round, both opponents collided with the heads, with Hill sustaining an injury. Mask remained unharmed and therefore received a point deduction in accordance with the rules. Nevertheless, he won the fight over twelve rounds unanimously on points (117: 110, 116: 113, 117: 110) and was thus able to return the favor for his defeat over ten years ago. Overall, Henry Maske celebrated his 31st victory in the 32nd professional fight. 3748 days after his first resignation, Maske also managed to return with a win after one of the longest breaks in boxing. Immediately after the verdict was announced, Maske said his final goodbye to professional boxing. An average of 15.99 million viewers followed the German's appearance on RTL television.
According to media reports, Hill received a combat exchange of around 1.2 million euros, and Mask around 1.5 million euros.

After the active career
In June 1999, under the motto “Fair Opportunities for Young People”, Maske founded the Henry Maske Fund , which is committed to helping disadvantaged young people, among other things, by setting up sports facilities, internet cafés and workshops. Mask is supported in these projects by celebrities such as the US actor Denzel Washington , who let the preview proceeds of his film Hurricane flow into the fund, and the former Federal Minister of Justice Herta Däubler-Gmelin , who was the first Henry with a mask in November 1999 in Berlin Mask Festival opened. He also operated ten McDonald’s branches in Leverkusen , Bergisch Gladbach and Cologne as a franchisee until 2019 . Mask also gives lectures on the subject of leadership and self-motivation.
In mid-September 2008 it became known that Mask would be the main actor in a biography about Max Schmeling (1905-2005) directed by Uwe Boll . Mask, who previously had extra roles in the television productions Then came you (2003) and Hammer & Hart (2006), took several months of acting lessons for the role of the German heavyweight world champion (1930 to 1932). The reviews for the film, but also for Maskes' acting performance, were devastating. Mask seems wooden, like a foreign body, sometimes involuntarily funny and has ultimately done his idol Schmeling a disservice. Mask received praise only for the recordings in the ring, for which boxing professionals such as Yoan Pablo Hernández and Arthur Abraham could be won.
In 2011 Henry Maske played in episode 115 of the children's series Die Pfefferkörner .
family
Mask has a son, Steven, with his first wife, Anke. Today he lives with his second wife Manuela and their daughters Lina and Sara in Overath near Cologne.
