Con te partirò [kon ˈte partiˈrɔ] (Italian for roughly: " With you I will go away ") is an Italian song composed by Francesco Sartori , the text was written by Lucio Quarantotto . The song is often performed in connection with farewell events and is also - interpreted by Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman - known as Time to Say Goodbye (English for: "Time to say goodbye").

background

The piece was first interpreted by Andrea Bocelli at the Sanremo Festival in 1995 and appeared on his album Bocelli from the same year. The song had worldwide success with the second version from 1996, partially sung in English by Andrea Bocelli with soprano Sarah Brightman , published as Time to Say Goodbye . The title has been awarded platinum more than 15 times across Europe .

Since then, numerous other versions have appeared by other interpreters, the most important of which was Por ti volaré , a Spanish version with hardly any text. There is also a German version, Zeit zu geh'n, sung by Angelika Milster in 1997. In 1999, Donna Summer released a dance remix in the USA that landed a hit in the American dance charts and also on the Billboard Hot 100 was represented. Among other things, Paul Potts sang the song at Oliver Kahn's farewell game between FC Bayern Munich and the German national soccer team on September 2, 2008.

development

The publication of the song in its original form by Polydor Italy was not commercially successful. Polydor and East West, however, marketed it in 1996 as the theme song of boxer Henry Maske's final fight against Virgil Hill . Vangelis ' Conquest of Paradise had been observed to be promoted by Maske's struggles. The song was rewritten as a duet with Sarah Brightman, who performed A Question of Honor for one of Maske's previous bouts. The German producer Frank Peterson , who has been working with Brightman since 1991, decided to give the song an English title instead of the German Mit dich wird ich weg geht ich .

The fight between Mask and Hill took place on November 23, 1996, and had 21 million viewers. Bocelli and Brightman sang their duet at the opening and at the end of the fight. By December 1996, the single reached the top of the German single charts , with sales of around 40,000 to 60,000 pieces per day and forecasts of at least one million by the end of the year. The albums of both singers also experienced an increase in sales. By February of the following year 1997, the single broke the sales record in Germany. With over 2.75 million copies sold and eleven gold records (5 times platinum), it was only surpassed by Candle in the Wind .

In France , the single was number one for six weeks and went platinum three times . It was number 1 in Belgium for twelve weeks and became the best-selling single of all time. It received six platinum awards in Belgium, four in the Netherlands and double platinum in Italy.

The duet was included on Sarah Brightman's 1997 album Timeless , which was renamed Time to Say Goodbye in the US , and the song moved to the top of the album. Brightman also recorded a solo version which was released on both the duet single and later albums.

Musical style

As with many of Bocelli's pieces, strings and the overall very calm, sentimental mood dominate. Since the song is about a feeling of farewell, the singing is rather calm by Bocelli standards, his voice rarely really goes up. In a duet with Sarah Brightman, his Italian singing alternates with Brightman's partly English singing.

Single release

The single version released at the end of 1996 appeared with the artist designation "Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli" and contains, in addition to the joint duet, a version of the title song sung only by Brightman and a song from Brightman's album Fly ( You Take My Breath Away ) as well as an exclusive on this single released piece by the singer ( Sleep Tight ).
