Frank Peterson (born December 20, 1963 in Hamburg ) is a German music producer.

Life

Frank Peterson was born on December 20, 1963 in Hamburg. At the age of four he was taught music theory and piano playing. He learned to play synthesizer and guitar, both acoustic guitar and electric guitar, at a young age. However, he never received a classical education, but taught himself everything. Then he started with recording and sound techniques. In the early 1980s, Peterson applied for a job in a Hamburg studio equipment store. Then he started working on his first demo tape. Soon after, he met Michael Cretu and showed him the tape.

Collaboration with Michael Cretu

Sandra

Cretu was so excited that he invited Peterson to Munich to work with him at Data-Alpha-Studio. He accepted and became a keyboardist in the band of Sandra , the ex-singer of Arabesque who was just beginning her solo career. At the time he was often referred to as Frank Peter.

He got his first recognition when Sandra landed at number one on the charts with Maria Magdalena . In 1988 Cretu and Sandra married and she and her band including Peterson moved to Ibiza .

Enigma

In Ibiza, Cretu and Peterson started working on a new project, Enigma . The first result was the single "Sadeness Part I", which combined media mystics and modern rhythm, religion and sexuality. It was widely played on the radio and took top chart positions. It was also interesting that "sadeness" was banned in some Catholic countries because it was an insult to the feelings of believers.

The single became a success and took its creators by surprise, so Cretu and Peterson continued their work on the Enigma album's debut. To make it even more mysterious, and because they wished to stay incognito, they adopted nicknames, Peterson became F. Gregorian and Cretu Curly MC The title of the album was the year of its creation, 1990, written in Roman numerals, " MCMXC aD ". One track on the album, "The Voice & The Snake," was written by Peterson alone. He was inspired to do this by the Apocalypse , part of the Bible. It was one of the darkest and most terrifying songs on the album. The album went gold and platinum in many countries. Some time after that there were many Enigma imitators.

Gregorian

In 1991 Peterson left Ibiza and went back to Hamburg. He decided to become a music producer. The main reason to leave Ibiza was the lack of opportunity to work on other projects. Peterson met keyboardist Tomas Schwarz during one of his stays in Spain and later worked with him. With the keyboardist Matthias Meissner, as well as Peterson's wife Susana Espelleta and her assistant Michael Wehr, they formed "Gregorian". The name of the project became Peterson's nickname, "Gregorian," which associated it with Gregorian chant that originated between the 7th and 9th centuries. Liturgical songs by Western Christian churches from Syria and Palestine, which soon spread across Western Europe. The word "Gregorian" refers to Pope Gregory I , who added Gregorian chant to the collection of church music.

Sadisfaction

Their first collaborative album "Sadisfaction" was influenced by the Enigma debut album. For example, sampled Gregorian chant was also used.

The sung parts were performed by Sisters of Oz and had a more pop-oriented sound than Enigma. The first single was "Once In A Livetime". The second single - "So Sad" - had a direct connection to the well-known "Sadeness". The titles were similar but in less somber tones. Another interesting fact is that the album's title "Sadisfaction" (not Satisfaction) is an intentional typo. This method was also used by Peterson for "Sadeness" (not Sadness) by Enigma. This play on words is intended to remember the Marquis de Sade , who was famous for his scandalous, erotic novels in the late 18th century.

Other Projects

For the next eight years, Peterson produced Sarah Brightman and Ofra Haza . During this time nothing was published under the name "Gregorian". Peterson felt that the market was saturated with enigmatic music. In 1999, however, he decided to start a new project, with the familiar name Gregorian .
