It is in MCMXC aD a concept album , the Gregorian chant mixed with pop music. The album received 57 platinum awards worldwide, including three in the US . It was listed on the Billboard 200 for over five years . The album sold over 20 million copies worldwide. The album title means 1990 in Roman numerals, followed by the abbreviation Anno Domini (Year of the Lord). As singles were Sadeness (Part I) , Principles of Lust , Mea Culpa (Part II) and The Rivers of Belief decoupled.

Allmusic's Ned Raggett wrote that the album was something that “shouldn't exist”, a mixture of “ Euro Disco and New Age spheres” with style. Cretu had an “open ear” for everything that worked, which is why Sadeness has developed into a worldwide hit. The album invites all listeners to sit back, relax and take a pleasant journey. He awarded four out of five stars. Entertainment Weekly awarded the grade A- (corresponds to 1- in German school grades). Marisa Fox wrote: “The album may not have the most accessible club hits on it, but this journey through what the group calls music, spirit, and meditation is entrancing as well as provocative.” (“The album may not offer the most accessible club hits , but this journey through what the group calls music, mind and meditation is both inviting and provocative. ")
