Marco Roberto Borsato (born December 21, 1966 in Alkmaar ) is a Dutch singer .

Life

Borsato was born in Alkmaar, but spent part of his childhood in Italy with his parents and two siblings. He is fluent in Italian. Borsato initially worked as a cook and in 1990 applied to the Dutch edition of the sound mix show . He won the competition and subsequently released three albums with Italian titles. While his debut album Emozioni in 1990 was a minor success and reached lower chart positions, Sento (1991) and Giorno per giorno (1992) did not make the jump into the Dutch charts.

Borsato began recording songs in Dutch, staying true to Italian music and singing Dutch versions of Italian stars such as songs by Anna Oxa , Giorgia , Riccardo Cocciante and Zucchero . In 1994 he had his greatest success to date with the song Dromen zijn bedrog , a cover of the Italian hit Storie di tutti i giorni by Riccardo Fogli . Borsato took the title, which reached number 1 in the Dutch charts, as Most Träume sind Fraud also in German, but was unable to place in the German charts. Borsato's first album with Dutch titles, simply called Marco , reached number 2 on the Dutch charts.

Further albums in Dutch followed, on which Borsato increasingly separated from the concept of Italian titles with Dutch lyrics. After a short break from 2000, he went public again with the singer Sita in 2002 and published the single Lopen op het water on the occasion of the wedding of Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Máxima Zorreguieta , which stayed at number 1 in the Dutch charts for four weeks . In 2002, Borsato's best-of double album Onderweg was released .

As the first Dutch singer, Borsato gave three sold out concerts in De Kuip . In 2006, with the concert show Symphonica in Rosso , he managed to fill the GelreDome in Arnhem with 35,000 spectators on ten evenings - and that in a country with only 16 million inhabitants. In 2008 he repeated this success with his Wit Light Show, with which he gave eight sold-out concerts in the GelreDome. The two planned concerts of the Symphonica in Rosso show in the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam (17,000 seats) in February 2016 turned into twelve concerts due to the high demand.

Marco Borsato is the most successful music star in the Netherlands. With 14 first places he is behind the Beatles (16) the interpreter with the most number one hits in the Netherlands .

Movie and TV

Borsato made his screen debut in Jean van de Velde's feature film Wit licht in 2008 , where he played the leading role.

Borsato was from season 2 to season 6 (2011-2016) coach in the talent show The Voice of Holland ; Since 2012 he has also been a coach in the program The Voice Kids .

Private

Since 1998, Borsato has been working as an ambassador for the WAR child organization, which helps war-traumatized children. Among other things, the proceeds from the duet Wat zou je doen , which he recorded in 2004 with rapper Ali B (* 1981) and which reached number 1 in the Dutch charts, benefited the organization.

Borsato was married to actress and television presenter Leontine Ruiters (* 1967). The couple has three children. In February 2020, the couple announced their split.
