Riccardo Cocciante 1998

Riccardo Vincent Cocciante ([ koˈtʃante ]; born February 20, 1946 in Saigon , French Indochina ), also Richard Cocciante , is an Italian singer and composer . Active as a singer since the 1970s, he celebrated great success in Italy and won the Sanremo Festival in 1991 ; from 1998 he also made a name for himself as a musical composer based in France .

Career

At the age of eleven, Cocciante moved to Rome with his Italian father and French mother , where he received his artistic training. Nevertheless, thanks to his mother, he also remained connected to French culture, which was to shape his entire work. In addition to Italy , he also lived for a while in the USA , France and, most recently, Ireland . He made his debut in 1972 with the album Mu , a kind of rock opera . Poesia followed in 1973, and in 1974 Cocciante first became widely known with Anima and especially the singles Bella senz'anima and Quando finisce un amore . The album was released in 1976 for the English-speaking market and the single When Love Has Gone Away could enter the Billboard Hot 100 . In the same year he also worked with his interpretation of the Beatles song Michelle on the double album for the film All This and World War II .

After the no less successful album L'alba (1975), Cocciante had her final breakthrough with the song Margherita (included on Concerto per Margherita ) in 1976. However, he was only able to achieve this success again in 1980 with the song (and album of the same name) Cervo a primavera , written in collaboration with Mogol . In the meantime he had also been able to establish himself musically in France. In 1982 Cocciante was released , in 1983 the experimental album Sincerità , which also received international attention, and in 1985 Il mare dei papaveri , on which he sang a duet with Mina in the song Questione di feeling . The extensive tour in 1986 found its way into a double live album.

The next studio album was La grande avventura in 1987, followed again by a tour and a live album. Then Cocciante withdrew for a while and spent u. a. Time in the usa. In 1991 he entered the Sanremo Festival and won with the song Se stiamo insieme (duet with Sarah Jane Morris ). The song found its way into his next studio album, Cocciante , which was to be his last in collaboration with Mogol. In the following years he published albums such as Eventi e mutamenti (1993), Un uomo felice (1994; with duets with a.o. Mina, Mietta , Cecilia Gasdia and Tosca ) and Innamorato (1997) as well as the compilation Il mio nome è Riccardo (1994) and the live album Istantanea (1998). After isolated successes in the Netherlands , the singer became better known there in the mid-1990s through several successful cover versions by Marco Borsato .

At the side of Plácido Domingo , Sarah Brightman and Helmut Lotti , Cocciante took part in Christmas in Vienna in 1997 , from which the album Christmas in Vienna V emerged . In 1998 he realized his dream of composing a musical : Together with Luc Plamondon he created Notre Dame de Paris (after Victor Hugo ), which became an internationally acclaimed success. In 1999 he sang Lei non vede me for the film Asterix and Obelix against Caesar ; In the same year, at the express request of Mayor Raymond Barre, he composed the official anthem of the city of Lyon together with Jean-Jacques Goldman . In the meantime, at home he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (Grand Officer). At the end of 2002 his second musical, Le Petit Prince , was released in France , based on Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince .

In 2005, Cocciante released the four-language album Songs and announced another musical project based on William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet . Giulietta e Romeo was finally premiered in the Colosseum in Rome. On February 28, 2006, Riccardo Cocciante was awarded the City of Sanremo Prize in recognition of his life's work as part of the Sanremo Festival . The compilation Sulle labbra e nel pensiero was released in 2013 , he also worked as a coach on the first edition of the talent show The Voice of Italy and was able to lead “his” candidate Elhaida Dani to victory.
