Jean-Jacques Goldman (2002)

Jean-Jacques Goldman ([ ʒɑ̃.ʒak.gɔld'man ]; born  October 11, 1951 in Paris ) is a French composer and interpreter . Goldman also operates under the pseudonyms Sweet Memories and Sam Brewski . His younger brother Robert Goldman is also a successful composer.

Life

Goldman's mother Ruth Ambrunn comes from Munich , his father Alter Mojze Goldman from Lublin in Poland . Jean-Jacques Goldman learned to play the piano and violin from the age of five. Between 1965 and 1967 he sang in the church in the Red Mountain Gospellers choir. During this time he also learned to play the blues guitar. From 1968 to 1970 Goldman was a member of The Phalanster group and performed mainly in the Parisian suburbs. Other members of the group were Christian and Alex Gibson, who had success as Gibson Brothers in 1980 in the disco scene.

Goldman's successful career began in 1975 as a singer, composer and instrumentalist for the Taï Phong group . There he met his future friend and musical companion Michael Jones . The style of Thaï Phong can be compared to that of Genesis in the 1970s.

Goldman's breakthrough as a soloist in France came in 1981 with the title Il suffira d'un signe . The term Démodé ("out of fashion") as the title of the album met with criticism from the record company, as did Minoritaire for the name of the successor record , as both words have a negative connotation .

Hits like Quand la musique est bonne , Je marche seul and Je te donne , a duet with Michael Jones and his first number one hit in France, followed. Although his music was an insider tip especially among students in Germany at the end of the eighties, he never made it into the charts here as a solo musician. Goldman also performed live in Germany in 1989, including in Berlin.

1990 began a new phase of his career, in which he worked together with Michael Jones and Carole Fredericks under the name "Fredericks, Goldman, Jones". The focus was on elaborate arrangements that were sung solo as well as in duets or trios. This collaboration resulted in two studio and two live albums. Carole Fredericks died of a heart attack while performing in June 2001.

From 1997, Goldman returned to his solo career. He was still supported by Jones. The albums En passant and Chansons pour les pieds were great successes, although they could hardly be more different. En passant was a very intimate album characterized by ballads, while the last studio album to date offers a wide variety of styles from disco to rock, folk and pop.

Goldman's tours in particular were very popular in France because, in addition to unusual arrangements of his songs, they also offer impressive stage technology. Two dozen tap dancers danced in the 2002 tour ensemble . A stage element located in the audience could be rotated so that the musicians could be seen alternately from all sides, and in the finale the main stage folded up completely so that the musicians stood five meters high on a wall and secured with snap hooks to Envole -moi made music. In 2002 Goldman announced that he would end his musical career as a singer.

Goldman also wrote songs for other performers such as Celine Dion ( Pour que tu m'aimes encore ), Patricia Kaas ( Il me dit que je suis belle ), Khaled ( Aïcha ) or Johnny Hallyday ( Je te promets ), for Celine Dion with D 'eux and S'il suffisait d'aimer as well as Johnny Hallyday with gang also entire albums. He is the composer and interpreter of the song Elle ne me voit pas for the soundtrack of the film Astérix et Obélix contre César , which was covered by Xavier Naidoo under the title She doesn't see me . He occasionally uses pseudonyms such as Sam Brewski , Sweet Memories , First Prayer or O. Menor . She doesn't see me achieved platinum status in Germany in 1999, the song Aïcha in the version of Outlandish ( Aicha ) achieved gold status in 2003.

Goldman wrote hits for Patricia Kaas under the pseudonym Sam Brewski . The name "O. Menor ”is nothing else than the French translation“ homme en or ”of his German-Jewish name“ Goldman ”, which can be represented aurally as“ OM en or ”. Under the pseudonym J. Kapler , his brother Robert Goldman writes songs for other performers. Under the name JRG have J ean-Jacques and R obert G oldman a production company founded.

Goldman also appears regularly with the Les Enfoirés project , within which many French music stars give a concert once a year. It was founded in 1985 by the actor and clown Coluche to raise funds for the organization Les Restos du Cœur , which provides food to the needy every day. Goldman contributed the title song Chanson des restos to this project in 1985 and was the only musician in France to take part in all benefit concerts.

To date, publications with Goldman participation have achieved silver, gold, platinum and diamond status more than 170 times in France alone, of which more than 75 publications have been successful under the name Jean-Jacques Goldman or Fredericks, Goldman, Jones . Celine Dion 's album D'eux, written and produced by Goldman, is the world's most successful French-language album. 21 Goldman songs have made it into the French top ten so far.

In the order of the most successful albums in France since 1968, Goldman's album Entre gris clair et gris foncé is number 9, his album D'eux, written and produced for Celine Dion, is number 1.
