Patricia Kaas

Patricia Kaas, 2009

Patricia Kaas (born December 5, 1966 in Forbach , Moselle department , France ) is a French singer .

Kaas is one of the most internationally successful French and French-speaking singers. Stylistically, her music does not belong to the classical chanson , but is a mixture of pop music and jazz . Since the release of her debut album Mademoiselle chante… in 1988, she has sold more than 15 million records. She had her greatest success in Germany and Switzerland with her third album Je te dis vous , which was released in 1993 and reached number 11 and 2 in the charts. Kaas toured frequently and in many parts of the world. In 2002 she made her film debut at the side of Jeremy Irons in the romance film And Now ... Ladies & Gentlemen .

Childhood and youth

Kaas was born the youngest of seven children (five boys and two girls). Her father Joseph, a miner, was from Lorraine , her mother Irmgard was from Saarland . Patricia grew up in Stiring-Wendel , a place between Forbach and Saarbrücken on the French side of the border. Since 2006 she has been an honorary citizen of the place. Up to the age of six she only spoke Saarland . Her origins are also the basis for her award-winning commitment to Franco-German friendship.

Her mother encouraged her to become a singer from a very young age. At the age of eight Kaas sang songs by Sylvie Vartan , Dalida , Claude François and Mireille Mathieu at various smaller events , as well as English-language titles such as New York, New York . At that time she was often on the Saarland stages, also as a member of the Forbacher "Pax Majorettes", a revue troupe of young girls. She also won a hit competition. Even at her first appearances, Kaas was characterized by her rough, smoky voice.

She took her first step into the professional music business at the age of 13. With the help of her brother Daniel, she got a contract and was able to perform in the Saarbrücken club Rumpelkammer . Kaas called himself Pady Pax at the time and was there on stage for seven years with the band Dob's Lady Killers . At the age of 16 she did an internship at a model agency in Metz . Her manager at the time, the architect Bernard Schwartz, soon led her to her first major success in the music business.

The singer Patricia Kaas

"Jalouse"

In 1985, Kaas was discovered by the French actor Gérard Depardieu . Through the efforts of Bernard Schwartz, the French composer François Bernheim and then Depardieu, who was friends with Bernheim, became aware of the singer. Impressed by Kaas' voice, Depardieu produced her first single Jalouse ( Eng. Jealous ), written by Depardieu's wife Elisabeth and Bernheim. The single was released by the record label EMI , financially it was a flop.

"Mademoiselle chante le blues"

The French composer Didier Barbelivien became aware of Kaas through Jalouse . His song Mademoiselle chante le blues (Eng. The lady sings the blues ) became the singer's first big hit. The single was released by Polydor in 1987 and reached number 14 on the French single charts . The following year, her second single was released D'Allemagne (Eng. About Germany ), written by Barbelivien and Bernheim. It is noteworthy that in the text of this chanson there is a small - spoken - text passage in German. A little later, Mademoiselle chante… , the artist's first album , was also released. It climbed to number 2 on the French charts, where it lasted more than two months; In total, it was 64 weeks in the top 10 and 118 weeks in the top 100. Shortly after its release, the album received gold (more than 100,000 records sold), and after three months even platinum (more than 350,000 records sold). In total, the album has been sold more than 2.5 million times worldwide to date. In the same year Kaas won the Victoire de la Musique in the category “Discovery of the Year”. She also received platinum in Belgium and Switzerland and gold in Canada for Mademoiselle chante… .

In 1990 Kaas began her first world tour, which lasted a total of 16 months. She sang in front of around 750,000 people at 196 concerts in twelve countries. She sang every day for a week in the famous Olympia concert hall in Paris . The concerts were sold out four months in advance. Kaas also gave successful concerts in the USA , New York and Washington . At the end of the tour, Mademoiselle chante… had sold more than a million copies in France and thus received diamond status . Kaas also received the Golden Europe .

"Scène de vie"

In 1991 she switched from her previous record company Polydor to CBS / Sony . Constant companions at Kaas' side since then have been Cyril Prieur and Richard Walter from Talent Sorcier in Paris , who replaced Bernard Schwartz as managers and have since contributed significantly to the singer's success. Kaas herself describes them as her "family".

With a new record company and new management, the album Scène de vie (Eng. Stage (scene) of life ) was released in 1991 . It was number 1 in the French charts for ten weeks and, like before, received Mademoiselle chante… diamond status. On the song Kennedy Rose , dedicated to Rose Kennedy , Kaas worked again with Elisabeth Depardieu and François Bernheim - with a little more success: the single reached number 34 in the French single charts.

Kaas' tour to Scène de vie took him to 13 countries (210 concerts, 650,000 spectators), including Japan , Canada and the USSR ( Moscow and Leningrad ). At the end of 1991 her first live album Carnet de scène (Eng. Memories ) was released. From this point onwards, a live album was released for almost every tour. 13 years later, Sony released a live DVD for the first time.

In 1991 Kaas received two other music awards with the World Music Award and a Bambi . The following year she took third place in the “Best International Singer” category at the first Echo Awards in Cologne .

"Je te dis vous"

The final breakthrough in the international music business is the 1993 album Je te dis vous ( I say you to you ), which has sold over 2.5 million times in 47 countries. The album, recorded in London in the Eel Pie Studio by Pete Townshend , was produced by Robin Millar , who also worked for Sade and the Fine Young Cannibals . In the USA and Great Britain it was released under the title Tour de charme (not to be confused with the live album of the same name). Among other things, Kaas sings a title in German for the first time: The song Ganz und Absolut comes from the pen of the German singer and composer Marius Müller-Westernhagen . There are also three titles in English, including the James Brown title It's a Man's World . The British rock musician Chris Rea accompanied Kaas on the guitar for the songs Out of the Rain and Ceux qui n'ont rien (Eng. Those who have nothing ).

Je te dis vous is Kaas' most successful album to date in German-speaking countries. In Germany , the top 10 was narrowly missed (two weeks at number 11), but the album stayed in the top 100 for 36 weeks. In Switzerland, Kaas reached number 2 in the charts with this album, in France again number 1. It was that third album in a row to achieve diamond status in France (eleven months after its release); no other French singer had succeeded in doing this with her first three albums. To this day, Je te dis vous is considered to be one of the best albums of modern chanson, the internet portal musicline.de counts it among the “albums with key qualities” of chanson. With the single Il me dit que je suis belle (Eng. He tells me I'm beautiful ) by Sam Brewski (alias Jean-Jacques Goldman ) Kaas also had her first top 10 single hit in France in 1993. A remix of Reste sur moi (dt. Stay on me ) made it into the top 20 of the US dance charts.

The following world tour took her to 19 countries. Among other things, she was the first western singer to appear in Hanoi after the war , and she also made guest appearances in Korea , Japan , Cambodia and Thailand . As part of the tour, she also gave a benefit concert in Chornobyl , Ukraine, in front of 30,000 spectators. She sang in front of 750,000 spectators at a total of 150 concerts. 1994 released their second live album Tour de charme (dt. A tour with charm ), the associated live DVD was released in 2004.

"Café noir"

In the mid-1990s, the album Café noir (often referred to as Black Coffee ) was produced. This is a work recorded in New York in 1995 especially for the American market with only English texts. It never officially went on sale. Nothing is known about the reasons for the non-publication.

With the title song, the singer falls back on a jazz standard that was already world-famous in versions of famous models such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald ; Kaas published his own reinterpretation on the 1997 sampler Jazz à Saint-Germain . The album also features cover versions of classics such as the Bill Withers title Ain't No Sunshine from 1971 and If You Leave Me Now from Chicago from 1976.

"Dans ma chair"

1997 also appeared Dans ma chair (Eng. In my body ). It was produced in New York by Kaas and Phil Ramone , who had worked with Ray Charles , Billy Joel and Paul Simon . For the first time, the singer officially worked with the French composer Jean-Jacques Goldman. This collaboration continues to this day and is considered one of the most important in her career.

A further contribution to the success of the album were the American songwriter and singer Lyle Lovett entitled Chanson simple (dt. Simple Song ), and James Taylor with Do not Let Me Be Lonely Tonight , in which he appeared as a duet partner. The title Quand j'ai peur de tout (Eng. When everything scares me ), written by Diane Warren , was released in 2003 by the band Sugababes under the title Too Lost in You .

To tour to Dans ma chair the live album and Kaas' first live DVD was released in 1998 Rendez-vous (dt. Date ) yet, at that time, however, as a videotape . You can hear the title L'aigle noir (Eng. The Black Eagle ) by the French singer and composer Barbara .

In December 1998 Kaas sang together with the tenors Plácido Domingo and Alejandro Fernández in the City Hall of Vienna . The three were accompanied by the Vienna Philharmonic . The concert was released in 1999 as Christmas In Vienna Vol. VI on CD and DVD.

"Le mot de passe"

In 1999 another studio album, Le mot de passe (English: The Password ), was released (produced by Pascal Obispo ), on which Kaas is accompanied by an orchestra on many pieces. Again Jean-Jacques Goldman provided a contribution with the title Une fille de l'Est (Eng. A girl from the east ) in which Kaas refers to her origins in eastern France. The French singer Zazie wrote the title J'attends de nous (Eng. I expect from us ). Les éternelles (Eng. The Timeless ) was also published in Germany in a duet with the Swiss tenor Erkan Aki under the title Unter der Haut ; it was also the theme song of the five-part ZDF series Sturmzeit .

In June 1999 Kaas performed alongside Mariah Carey , Luther Vandross and Status Quo at the two charity concerts Michael Jackson & Friends in Seoul and Munich . The two major events in favor of UNESCO , the Red Cross and the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund were broadcast in 39 countries.

In September 1999, Kaas came third behind top models Laetitia Casta and Estelle Hallyday in the election for Marianne , the French national symbol .

On the tour to Le mot de passe Kaas was accompanied by the NDR Pops Orchestra of the North German Radio under the direction of the conductor Georges Phelivanian at several concerts in Germany and Switzerland . With this ensemble she was a star guest at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 1999. The concert on July 24, 1999 on the town hall market of Hamburg was broadcast live on ARTE . The orchestra can be heard on the live album Ce sera nous , released in 2000, but not seen on the live DVD.

In October 2000 Kaas received the Adenauer de Gaulle Prize .

In April 2001, on the occasion of the handover from Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg to his son Henri, she gave a concert in front of 50,000 spectators. This time Kaas was accompanied by the musicians of the Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg .

"Piano Bar"

In 2001 Kaas began her acting career with the film And Now… Ladies & Gentlemen by the French director Claude Lelouch , with whom she had already worked on the soundtrack for Les Misérables .

In 2002 the concept album Piano Bar was released , which is not the soundtrack for the film; the actual soundtrack was never released. Piano Bar is Kaas' first album, which was mainly released in English. It contains cover versions of Where Do I Begin and Jacques Brels Ne me quitte pas (Eng. Don't leave me ), here in English under the title If You Go Away . In 2002 Kaas received the Golden Europe for the second time .

The Piano Bar Live tour began in France in September 2002 and lasted until April 2003. Six sold-out concerts were played in the USA, including in Los Angeles , Chicago , San Francisco and Detroit, and two on Broadway at the Beacon Theater in front of 6,000 spectators each.

"Sexe on"

In December 2003 the album Sexe fort (Eng. Strong sex ) was released. With this album, too, Kaas was unable to build on her earlier successes. Again Jean-Jacques Goldman contributed some songs with C'est la faute à la vie (German: life is to blame ) and On pourrait (German: one could ), which he also produced himself; also Pascal Obispo, the producer of Le mot de passe , with L'Abbé Caillou (Eng. The Abbot Caillou ). Kaas sang the title On pourrait in a duet with the Swiss singer Stephan Eicher .

Kaas received a special award one week after the publication of Sexe fort , on December 8, 2003, when she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for her services to Franco-German friendship - an honor that only a few international artists have received.

Patricia Kaas during the Sexe fort tour 2005 in Wiesbaden

Her seventh world tour lasted until the end of 2005. It led through 25 countries, including China and Russia again, while the concerts in the USA were canceled without giving any reason. In total, the singer gave 175 concerts in front of more than 500,000 spectators.

The tour's live album Toute la musique… and the live DVD of the same name in combination with a best-of album were released in early 2005 . The title song Toute la musique que j'aime ( Eng . All the music I love ) comes from the pen of the French singer and composer Johnny Hallyday . As a bonus, the album features the song Herz einer Kämpfers , which Kaas recorded in collaboration with Peter Plate from the German pop band Rosenstolz . During the television broadcast of the German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest in Berlin in March 2005 , Kaas presented the song live to an audience of millions for the first time. The song had its live world premiere at a concert in November 2004 in the Philipshalle in Düsseldorf .

After completing the Sexe fort tour in November 2005, Kaas took a longer break, apart from a few live performances. At the beginning of 2008 she published the title Не позвонишь ( Eng . You do not call ) together with the Russian group Uma2rman .

"Cabaret"

Patricia Kaas (2009)

In February 2009 Patricia Kaas released her eighth studio album Kabaret . The CD pays homage to cabaret and music of the 1930s. The recordings are sung in French, English, German and Russian.

On May 16, 2009 Patricia Kaas represented her home country at the Eurovision Song Contest in Moscow . With the song Et s'il fallait le faire she took eighth place.

Kaas regularly takes part in the annual Les Enfoirés charity concert .

"Kaas chante Piaf"

In 2012 she released a tribute album with 15 chansons by Edith Piaf . On this album she is musically supported by the composer Abel Korzeniowski , who has twice been nominated for the Golden Globe, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra .

Stylistic peculiarities and musical appreciation

The term “chanson” has been less clearly defined since the 1980s and the appearance of new innovative interpreters. The fact that Kaas is assigned to this genre has often been attributed by critics to marketing considerations of the music industry , as this seems obvious to a French woman who sings mainly in the language of her home country. In fact, Kaas' style has its roots mainly in Anglo-American pop and rock, as well as in their precursors jazz and blues . This stylistic alignment also harmonizes with the character described as "smoky" of her relatively rough alto to mezzo-soprano voice with a subtle fragility .

In addition, Kaas also demonstrates a pronounced certainty in terms of rhythm and phrasing , which is often lacking in European singers outside the English-speaking area. The comparison of her French and German texts with those in English demonstrates how Kaas disregards the groove problems that are sometimes inherent in these languages . For example, the stress pattern of French, which is uniform in comparison to American English, or the “hard” consonant clusters and finals in German, which often cause problems for singers in connection with offbeat emphasized rhythm.

In this context, Kaas was able to build on a very long tradition of the French music business, which is open to Anglo-American influences, but at least equally encourages and is willing to accept native-speaking artists. Nonetheless, her pronounced interest in rhythm had a style-forming effect from the beginning of her career and - in addition to her multilingualism - opened up access to a broad and international audience.

The actress Patricia Kaas

Germinal and Falling in Love Again

In 1993 Kaas was offered a role in the Claude Berri film Germinal , but at the same time she recorded her third album Je te dis vous . In 1994, Kaas was offered the lead role in the film Falling in Love Again by American director Stanley Donen . She was supposed to portray the German-American singer and actress Marlene Dietrich , whose song Lili Marleen she often sang at a young age. However, the project failed due to funding.

Kaas initially only had serious contact with the film business as a singer: she interpreted the theme song for the 1995 film Les Misérables ( German: Die Elenden , based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo ) by French director Claude Lelouch . Bertrand Tavernier used the song Il me dit que je suis belle (Eng. He tells me that I am beautiful ) from the 1993 album Je te dis vous in his film L'appât (Eng. The bait ).
