Alain Barrière (born November 18, 1935 in La Trinité-sur-Mer , Bretagne ; actually: Alain Bellec ; † December 18, 2019 in Carnac , Bretagne) was a French singer and composer .

Life

To do his parents, who made a living from fishing, a favor, he first studied at the Les Arts et Métiers college and graduated with an engineering degree.

In addition to working as an engineer, he wrote his own chansons and won first prize in a competition with Cathy in 1961 . The following year he had his first success with Une fille pleurait . In 1963 he took part in the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson with the title Elle était si jolie and took fifth place. The song was very successful in France both in its own version and in a cover version by Rika Zaraï . Until the mid-1970s he wrote other successful titles such as La Marie Joconde , Ma vie (1964), La maison vide (1965), Les guinguettes , Toi (1966), Lolita , Va (1967),  Viva Ouagadougou (1969), Rien qu 'un homme (1970) or Si tu ne me revenais pas (1972).

In 1975 he made his international, Europe-wide breakthrough with the hit Tu t'en vas, a duet with Noëlle Cordier . With songs like Paris Disco , Amoco (1978) and I Wanna Be Me (1979), like his chanson colleagues Dalida and Claude François , he devoted himself to the disco style that was extremely popular at the time . Paris Disco and Amoco were his last big hits in the French singles charts.

In addition to his career, he bought a plot of land in Carnac , on which he had an old castle (Le Stirwen) restored as a disco / restaurant. Bad advice, he got into trouble with this project with the tax authorities and in 1977 left France with his family for four years and went to the United States.

After his return he released new songs and albums, e. B. La mer est là , but could no longer gain a foothold. He left France one more time, this time for a long time, and went to Québec . Back in France in the early 1990s, he released his last studio album Barrière '97 in 1997, along with a best-of collection on CD.

In 2003 he said goodbye to the scene, but reappeared in 2005 with concerts, a new best-of CD and his autobiography Ma Vie , which contains a CD with four new titles, as well as the first DVD and was able to at least in France and Canada to build on its former successes. In April 2007 Barrière gave two acclaimed concerts at the Paris Olympia for the first time in many years . At the same time, he was recognized on French television news with a short report available on the Internet.

On September 16, 2011, Barrière celebrated his final farewell from the stage. The last concert with the title Le dernier rendez-vous took place in the Palais des congrès de Paris . In total, Barrière sold over six million singles and albums in France alone.

Barrière suffered several strokes in the last years of his life. He suffered the last in early December 2019 before his wife Anièce, with whom he had been married since 1975, died from cancer. On December 18, 2019, Barrière died of cardiac arrest at the age of 84.
