The oldest edition is in English. It has existed since 2002 and until January 2008 belonged to the British media group East Midlands Allied Press PLC (Emap). The Hamburg-based Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG acquired the magazine with a package of radio stations and magazines (Emap Consumer Media division) for almost 1.6 billion euros. Since then, the English Closer has been published and further licensed by Bauer Consumer Media Ltd., a subsidiary of the Bauer Media Group . This issue had a circulation of 351,632 issues in the first half of 2013 and a reach of 1,425,000 readers in 2012. The editor-in-chief was Jane Johnson from 2002 to 2007, and Lisa Burrow has been since then.

The French licensed edition was initially published by Emap France (subsidiary of Emap) from 2005. In 2006, Emap France came to the Italian publishing group Mondadori , which is majority owned by Silvio Berlusconi's family holding Fininvest , for 545 million euros , and formed the core of the new Mondadori France. The French Closer had a circulation of around 400,000 copies in 2005. The editor-in-chief is Laurence Pieau.

The German licensed edition has been on the market since February 2012 and is published by Heinrich Bauer Verlag KG, the German branch of the Bauer Media Group. The sold circulation is 64,076 copies, a decrease of 57.8 percent since 2012. Since September 2019 Closer has been produced together with InTouch , Joy and Shape by a joint editorial team in Hamburg led by Angela Meier-Jakobsen . In 2013, a series of front pages published in 2012 by German Closer about the TV family Die Geissens was nominated for a LeadAward in the “Cover of the Year” category.

Content

Closer mainly contains celebrity gossip , emotional "real life" stories, and topics related to fashion, lifestyle and television.

In September 2012, the French edition of Closer published topless photos taken by the paparazzi of Kate Middleton while on vacation with husband Prince William in a castle in the south of France. The images, taken with a strong telephoto lens from a public road about 1 kilometer away, sparked a heated discussion about personal rights and security issues, rejection and death threats against Closer as well as threats of legal action by the couple, whereupon the English edition of the magazine distanced itself and assured it that it would do not publish these images. French authorities ordered a temporary halt to the spread and confiscated the original photos. The editor-in-chief of the French Closer, however, stated that she had only done her job as a journalist with the print.

In January 2014, the French Closer also brought paparazzi photos that were supposed to prove an affair with the actress Julie Gayet , which the President François Hollande had been saying for a long time . Closer later announced that it would take the photos off the website and continue to sell the magazine. Because of the sales success of this story, 150,000 copies of the magazine were reprinted in the following week, and the number of hits on the website rose by 800 percent to 1.4 million on January 10, 2014.
