Amina Annabi ( Arabic أمينة العنابي, DMG Amīna al-ʿAnnābī ; born on March 5, 1962 in Carthage , Tunisia ) is a French- Tunisian singer and actress who appears under her first name Amina .

Life

Amina Annabi's mother is Tunisian, her father French. On the maternal side, making music was already a tradition. At the age of eleven she was determined to continue this tradition. She came into contact with real stars through one of her uncles, who was involved in organizing a festival , where Joan Baez and James Brown performed alongside African artists . It was here that she met the young Senegalese singer Wasis Diop , with whom she became friends and later worked together. In 1975 the divorced mother and the ambitious daughter moved to Paris . There Amina took singing and dancing lessons. In 1978 she started her own band , which in 1982 finally led to a solo career. She received support from the Paris radio station Radio Nova, which specializes in world music , and whose co-operator Martin Meissonnier she soon married. In 1983 she won a music competition in Paris with a rap song underlaid with Arabic rhythms , which made it onto a CD . In 1985 the single Shango followed , a duet with Afrika Bambaata . Engagements as a background singer with Yasuaki Shimizu on the one hand and Haruomi Hosano on the other hand brought her popularity and many appearances in Japan in 1987 . During these years she also started a career as an actress. It was first seen in the cinema in 1989.

Also in 1989 was her debut album Yahil (Eng .: night). She had written it with her husband Messonier, who had also produced it. The arrangements are partly by Wasis Diop. With this as with later CDs, different countries followed suit at intervals, so that different publication details may arise. On her further path as a singer she worked with Diop again and again, but names like Manu Dibango , Lenny Kravitz , Dave Stewart , Malcolm McLaren , Goran Bregović and Nigel Kennedy also appear. The diversity of these colleagues underscores its claim in any drawer be plugged to want. In keeping with her roots, she uses the world beat as well as the more or less modern styles of techno , hip-hop , trip-hop and jazz , whatever she likes .

She achieved greater fame in German-speaking countries with her second place for France at the Eurovision Song Contest 1991 in Rome . Since Annabi and her competitor Carola from Sweden were equal in points, the final result was determined according to the rules in force at the time, based on the frequency of awarding the maximum scores. Both interpreters had the highest score of 12 points the same number of times, but Carola had more than 10 points and thus became the winner.
