Worldbeat
The term Worldbeat as a style of music designation came up in the early 1980s when international pop music was repeatedly combined with folklore from all regions of the world. The name Worldbeat is not tied to a specific style , but primarily focuses on the multicultural fusion of music.

When Peter Gabriel (ex- Genesis singer) started his WOMAD festival (“World of Music Arts and Dance” ) in 1982 , the term “world beat” came up for the first time. This festival of music , art and dance from different cultures aroused the interest of other artists such as David Byrne or Paul Simon in folklore from all over the world, who began working with musicians from Asia, South America and Africa and making albums in the mid- 1980s to produce. Paul Simon was very successful in 1986 with his album Graceland , which he recorded in South Africa.
Especially artists from Africa benefited from the creation of the Worldbeat. In the early 1990s , the best-known example of the Senegalese Youssou N'Dour u. a. his international breakthrough in Europe thanks to his collaboration with Peter Gabriel .
In 2002 Panjabi MC was very successful with his world beat hit Mundian To Bach Ke and made it to number 2 in the single charts in Germany .

Although worldbeat is often equated with world music , one has to distinguish between the two terms. World music is an umbrella term and, in contrast to world beat , originated in the 1950s . In contrast to world music, Worldbeat not only stands for music from the most diverse regions of the world, but especially for the amalgamation of pop music and folklore .
