L'Illa de la Quarentena is a small Mediterranean island. It is located at the entrance to the port of Maó in the northeastern part of the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca . It has an area of around 10,000 m² and is also known under the name Illa Plana (German: Flat Island).

history

In order to protect their city and the island from the plague epidemics that were raging in Europe at the time , the island administration decided in the 13th century that all arriving travelers had to be isolated in a specially built hospital before entering the island . The term quarantine is derived from this regulation, meaning the island name L'illa de la Quarentena , which was first mentioned in records from 1490.

Another historical source reports that in addition to the occupation, goods were also isolated on the island and were only allowed to be brought ashore after thirty days, and later after forty days. In 1842 a completely new military hospital, adapted to health needs, was built on the island.

In 1993 the island of Illa de la Quarentena was declared a biosphere reserve and included in the UNESCO agreements. The focus is on the protection of individual parts of the landscape and natural monuments . The island is also a nesting place for rare species of birds such as the Balearic Shearwater , the osprey ( Pandion haliaetus ) and the petrel ( Hydrobates pelagicus ).

Bibliography

The Scottish doctor and writer John Armstrong , who lived temporarily on the island of Menorca during the English rule from 1708 to 1756, wrote a book entitled: Historia de la Isla Menorca (The history of the island of Menorca) . The first edition was published in English in London in 1752 and a second revised Spanish version followed in 1781. In this book, Armstrong describes, among other things, the Illa de la Quarentena and the activities of the port and health authorities of Menorca during the 18th century.
