L'Illa del Rei ( Spanish Isla del Rey ) is an island in the Mediterranean. It is located in the middle of the main fairway at the port entrance of Maó , on the northeast side of the Balearic island of Menorca .

history

The Illa del Rei is considered one of the special historical places of Menorca. In 1287 King Alfonso III. during the Christian reconquest of Menorca with his troops there in the fight against the Muslims. The original name of the island of Illa dels conills was changed to Illa del Rei at the end of 1287 in honor of the conqueror. Remains of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century indicate an early settlement of the island of Illa dels conills .

The Military Hospital (now in ruins) with the characteristic, highly visible silhouette was built by the British in the 18th century, this island as Bloody Iceland ( German  bloody island designated). The original plan of the facility comes from the governor of the island of Menorca. Richard O'Cahan . Construction of the hospital began in 1711 under the direction of Admiral John Jennings (1664-1743), in command of the British Mediterranean operation, and was completed in 1776. In 1964 the hospital was abandoned and relocated to Mahón.

In 1979 the hospital and adjoining buildings as well as the basilica were placed under monument protection (Declaración de Monumento Histórico-Artístico y Arqueológico de carácter Nacional) .

1993 Illa del Rei became a biosphere reserve declared as the approximately 42,400 square meter island, inter alia, the habitat of Podarcis lilfordi balearica , one where endemic subspecies of the Balearic lizard ( Podarcis lilfordi ) from the family of Real lizards (Lacertidae) is.

In 2005, a Fundación Hospital de la Isla del Rey was established with the aim of maintaining the facilities.
