Illa d'en Colom (Spanish: Isla de Colom , German meaning island of Columbus ) is an uninhabited island in the Mediterranean about 290 meters east of the Balearic island of Menorca . The name variant Isla de los Conejos (German island of rabbits ) can also be found on old maps .
geography
With an area of 59.5 hectares , it is the largest side island of Menorca. It is part of the nature reserve Parc natural de s'Albufera des Grau in the eastern part of Menorca. Administratively it is part of the urban area of Mahón , the capital of Menorca, and is located 600 meters northeast of the district of Es Grau . The highest point is the hill of Colom ( turó d'en Colom ) at 43 meters .
On the west side of the island there are two beaches, Tamarells in the south and s'Arenal d'en Moro in the north.
history
In 1904 the island was bought by Don Antoni Roca Várez from Mahón at auction and has since been the summer residence of the Roca family.
In 1967 the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 4th century were discovered on the island .
In October 2010, the island was offered for sale for around six million euros. In June 2018, the island changed hands again for 3.2 million euros.
