Parc natural de s'Albufera des Grau is a nature reserve on the Spanish Balearic island of Menorca . Menorca's largest side island, Illa d'en Colom, is also part of the area.

The approximately 1,947  hectares large natural park is made up of land, wetlands and a lagoon , the three torrents fed by fresh water. The depression covered by the lagoon was formed in the Paleozoic . The area is made of very old, impervious Devonian rock , which is heavily influenced by erosion . The lagoon is separated from the Mediterranean by a belt of dunes. At the same time, the lagoon is the heart of the biosphere reserve .

S'Albufera des Grau is classified as a natural area of special interest ( Àrea natural d'especial interès / ANEI) according to Law 1/91 of the Balearic Parliament and as a special bird protection zone ( Zona de Especial Interés para la Avifauna / ZEPA) according to Directive 79 / 409 / EEC of the European Commission . It also has the status of a nature reserve of international importance according to the Ramsar Convention . At the end of 1993 this area was declared a biosphere reserve by the UNESCO international committee .

location

Cabo de Favàritx

The natural park is located in the northeastern part of the island of Menorca and borders the town of Es Grau and the beach of the same name, Playa del Grau. There is a road connection via the PMV-7102 road from Es Grau and the PM-715 main road from Cabo de Favàritx. The park is freely accessible and offers visitors ideal conditions for observing the animals.

Flora and fauna

In the summer months with little precipitation, the freshwater influx of the three torrents dries up and seawater penetrates in some places. Depending on the location, this results in different salt contents in the soil, which has an impact on the plant species that settle there, of which more than 200 different occur in the nature reserve.

The wetlands of s'Albufera des Grau, which are less influenced by salt water, are populated by various grasses such as rushes , reeds , ravenna grass and cattails .

A major reason for setting up the nature park was to protect the around 100 different bird populations that occur there . A distinction must be made between the native birds nesting in s'Albufera des Grau and those migratory birds that use the area on Menorca as a transit station and other species that occur there, which nest elsewhere but fly to the nature park as a source of food.

The species found in the area include the mallard , the coot , the pond rail , the little grebe , the blue tit , the little bittern , the stilt and the reed warbler . Among the migratory birds, cormorants , gray herons , teals , shovelers and pochards spend the winter here .

There is a visitor center that provides adults and children with vivid information about the fauna and flora of the park.
