Johann Martin Niederée

Johann Martin Niederée (born November 22, 1830 in Linz am Rhein , † September 3, 1853 in Berlin ) was a German artist.

Life

Niederée came from a family of craftsmen based in Linz and attended the Linz Progymnasium from 1841 to 1845 , but dropped out of school at the behest of his father, who, as a trained butcher, had nothing to do with his son's artistic talent and wanted him to do it too To learn profession. However, Niederée's grandfather, who was a sexton at the parish church in Linz , and two local artists who recognized his talent, convinced him to take the path of an artist.

With the intention of attending an art academy in the near future, Niederée traveled to Düsseldorf in January 1848 , where he worked as a lithographer and wood cutter for a local company. On March 1 of the following year, Niederée became a full-time student at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he had previously attended evening courses. He interrupted his studies for health reasons in the spring of 1852 and returned to his homeland, where he became engaged to the sister of his childhood friend.

Soon thereafter, he was called up to perform his military service with the 1st Guards Regiment on Foot in Potsdam , where he was called up for a three-year service. During his time as a recruit, he finally turned to his compatriot Peter von Cornelius , who lived in Berlin and who then became his patron. Soon after, Niederée received an invitation from the art-loving Grand Duke of Weimar , and he was still able to travel to Rome , where von Cornelius was staying.

But Niederée never embarked on these journeys: During an exercise, a comrade's blank cartridge hit him and the wound he was left with became infected. 17 days before his release died Niederée in the military hospital in Berlin at the age of 22 years lockjaw .

Works

In his 22 years he created 47 oil paintings, several sketches, studies and designs for glass windows.
