The Martinus-Gymnasium in Linz am Rhein ( MGL for short ) is a state school run by the Neuwied district . It is currently attended by 739 students who are taught by 66 teachers. The dynamic development of the number of students is reflected in the expansion of the main building into the inner courtyard. The extension, which was built in 1996 and is attached to the main building, mainly houses the students of the orientation level.

The Martinus-Gymnasium Linz was founded in 1706 as "Studium Martianum" and is one of the oldest schools in the Rhineland. The traditional name "Martinus-Gymnasium" was chosen by the college, school parents' council and the student body in 1967 when the current school building was occupied.

Important dates in the development of the school:

  • 1706–1815: Linz Municipal School (then Cologne Electorate)
  • from 1817: Royal Progymnasium in Linz on the Rhine. (Prussia)
  • from 1911: full institution
  • from 1937: German secondary school
  • from 1945/1953: Old and new language grammar school
  • from 1974: establishment of the Mainz study level
  • 2006: The school celebrates its 300th anniversary
  • 2007: Headmaster Reiner Meier leaves the school and changes to the KMK in Bonn, Ina Dammann becomes acting headmaster
  • 2007: fundamental renovation of the natural science rooms
  • 2008: On February 6th, Axel B. Brott takes over the position of headmaster
  • 2009/2010: Energetic renovation of the main building (facade renewal and modernization of the heating systems)
  • 2010: Introduction of the teacher's room principle (trial year)
  • 2011: return to the classroom principle
  • 2011: Renewal of the sports hall facade
  • 2014: Axel B. Brott leaves school and changes to the German School Istanbul , Lutz Hasbach becomes the acting headmaster
  • 2015: Thomas Schmacke takes over the position of headmaster
  • 2018: Deputy Director Lutz Hasbach leaves the school
