Anton Joseph Weidenbach (born April 9, 1809 in Linz am Rhein , † November 21, 1871 in Wiesbaden ) was a teacher who also worked as a publicist , archivist and historian .

Life

Anton Joseph Weidenbach was the son of the Linz city servant Christian Weidenbach . From 1817 he attended the humanistic grammar school Martinianum in Linz, where he learned the Latin language. Around 1825 he left school without a high school diploma and attended the teachers' college in Brühl to be trained as a primary school teacher. Since there was a shortage of teachers in Prussia at that time , Weidenbach was exempted from military service. Until 1829 he taught probably in his hometown Linz and from 1829 to 1835 in Bacharach . During this time he was already publishing notes on Rhenish history. In 1835 he married the daughter of the mayor of Bacharach, Emilie Karoline Diel (1816–1893).

Ahrweiler

He then taught at the city school in Ahrweiler and also worked in the city archive. His first book, A Genealogy of the Counts of Are , was published. In 1840 he passed an exam pro facultate docendi with distinction at Bonn University , which enabled him to teach at higher schools. He was in lively correspondence with professors Karl Simrock , Gottfried Kinkel and the antiquarian and publicist Christian von Stramberg . From 1847, Weidenbach wrote regularly for the Kreisblatt for the Ahrweiler and Adenau districts . In 1848 Weidenbach gave two speeches in Heppingen and on the land crown for the revolution. Fearing persecution after the Hecker uprising in Baden was put down, he fled to Belgium .

Bingen

In 1849 Weidenbach came back to Prussia and took over the management of a secondary school for girls in Bingen . He also wrote his first books on Greek and Roman sagas and a travel guide about Bingen and Kreuznach . His greatest work was Die Regesten der Stadt Bingen (1853) . In that year he was from Grand Duke Ludwig III. appointed Hofrat by Hesse . On March 5, 1857, he was appointed justice of the peace, although he had never studied law. In 1864 Weidenbach finished school and moved to Wiesbaden .

Wiesbaden

There he ran a statistical office. After the death of Strambergs in 1868, at his request, he continued to work at the Rheinischer Antiquarius , of which he wrote five new volumes within two years. After Nassau was taken over by Prussia, the statistical office in Wiesbaden was closed and Weidenbach received the offer to move to Berlin , which he refused. Weidenbach had to quit his job because of a liver disease; he died on November 21, 1871.
