Johann Christian Hermenegild Joseph Franz de Paula Benjamin Stramberger von Grosberg (born October 13, 1785 in Koblenz ; † July 20, 1868 there ) was a German historian and author . He became famous above all for his work " Rheinischer Antiquarius ".

Life

Johann Christian von Stramberg was born on October 13, 1785 in Koblenz. His father was the court judge and notary Joseph Stramberger von Großberg (1742–1829), who came from Austria, and his mother was Maria Franziska von Gaerz (1755–1808).

He graduated after attending high school in Koblenz from 1803 in Erlangen , and soon after in Paris , the legal and political science , and he also put a focus on foreign languages and history. In 1810 he joined the administration of the Rhine-Moselle department . With the support of his authority, he wrote his first work, " Topographical Description of the Canton Rheinbach ", which he was able to complete in 1816.

When his housekeeper Maria Luzia Bozen was expecting a child from him, they married at the beginning of 1818. This inappropriate marriage brought him into trouble in his environment, all the more since he was one of the most devout and conservative Catholics. The marriage lasted, however, and had four more children.

When he completed the first volume of the " Rheinischer Antiquarius " in 1843 , he did not achieve the sales figures he had hoped for, so that further financing was in jeopardy. One of his few readers was Levin Schücking (1814–1883), then culture editor of the " Kölnische Zeitung ". He drew attention to the antiquarian through reports in his and other newspapers, so that the number of readers rose unexpectedly and Stramberg was able to write more volumes.

Von Stramberg withdrew further and further in order to devote himself to his life's work, especially since he was unable to walk after a foot injury and a skin cancer was visibly disfiguring his face. He died on July 20, 1868 in Koblenz and was buried in St. Kastor .

The Rheinische Antiquarius

The full title of this 39-volume work is: Memorable and Useful Rhenish Antiquarian, who presents the most important and pleasant geographical, historical and political peculiarities of the entire Rhine from its outflow into the sea to its origin, by a researcher in historical matters .

Stramberg borrowed the title and pseudonym from Johann Hermann Dielhelm , his memorable and useful Rheinischer Antiquarius, who found the most important and pleasant geographical, historical and political peculiarities of the entire Rhine river, from its origin and all its tributaries until it finally settled down after losing again, represents. Along with a brief description of the most distinguished cities in Holland. From an avid researcher In Historischen Dingen first appeared in two volumes in 1739–40 in Frankfurt am Main and saw two further editions in 1744 and 1776. Dielhelm's initials are hidden in the first letters of " In Historischen Dingen " .

Stramberg, as the title suggests, deals with the places around the banks of the Rhine and describes the most diverse conditions that exist in these places. He attaches great importance to reproducing all of these facts as possible. Whether these are legends or true stories, rumors or anecdotes, is often difficult to understand because he rarely reveals his sources. Furthermore, the narrative style in which his work is written makes it difficult for the reader to follow his reports; it often deviates significantly from the actual topic. A register is completely missing. Nevertheless, his work is a valuable treasure trove for local history researchers to this day, many details were written down about certain places that would otherwise have been forgotten.

Many employees were involved in the creation of the Antiquarius . Well-known names among these were, for example, the archivist Leopold von Eltester (1822–1879), Julius Wegeler (1807–1883) and Anton Joseph Weidenbach (1809–1871). The books were published by the Koblenz publisher Rudolph Friedrich Christian Hergt .

Stramberg was unable to complete his work, he did not get beyond Cologne - starting from Koblenz . The last volume he wrote was the 14th volume of the III. Department. In the years 1869 to 1871 after Stramberg's death, Anton Joseph Weidenbach wrote five volumes on the antiquarian . With Weidenbach's death in 1871, the company came to a standstill.
